1 ILASFAA: 2014 MAP ADVISING RECOMMENDATIONS

2 2014 Background MAP Task Force – Illinois General Assembly – 2013 Concluded that students would benefit from additional advising. Established MAP Advising Workgroup MAP Advising Workgroup Promote retention and degree completion among MAP recipients To improve outcomes for students, in particular, MAP students.

3 2014 Background MAP recipients graduate at same rate as other students attending the same school. Room for improvement Increase the number of students that finish their programs in a timely manner

4 2014 Background Offering additional support for students, especially those receiving MAP, who are often 1 st generation students with preparation and adjustment issues will increase the likelihood of success for these students.

5 2014 Recommendations MAP Institutions will… institute programs to enable them to meet the following goals: Realize a 5 percent improvement in graduation and completion rates over the next 6 years Realize a reduction in achievement gaps by 25% over the next 6 years. 6 2014 Recommendations MAP Institutions will… make strong academic advising available for all students and provide mandatory advising for first year students and students that are part of the at-risk population. Provide a description of advising and support programs to ISAC annually. Advising and Support Programs

7 2014 Recommendations 1. Define the At-Risk Group 2. Annually gather graduation and completion rate data and submit it to ISAC. 3. Annually gather advising and support program information and submit it to ISAC. 4. If not in place, institute programs to enable schools to meet the graduation and completion rate goals. 12 2014 Graduation and Completion Rate Data For community colleges: CCA Outcome Metric 2: Graduation Rates 3: Transfer Out Rates CCA Progress Metric 5: Retention Rates (fall-to-fall) 6: Course Completion Data will be obtained from ICCB for all community colleges.

13 2014 Completion and Graduation Rate Data Measuring Reduction in Achievement Gap Compare the rates for all students in a cohort with the rates of the school’s at-risk group, MAP recipients, and minority students.

16 2014 Advising and Support Programs Best Practices Gathering Information on Programs such as: Tutoring Degree Mapping Counseling/Mentoring Tracking and Early Warning Transition/Orientation Programs targeted at completion and retention.
