1.To understand how density applies to some everyday situations 2.To look at floating & sinking with respect to density 3.To conduct a brief investigation into density Book Reference : Pages 162-163

Anyone like to guess what the density of water is?

1 litre of water weighs 1kg (at 4°C) Since 1 litre is 1/1000 th m 3 this means that the density of water is 1g/cm 3 or 1000kg/m 3 What happens to objects with a lower density in water? What happens to objects with a lower density in water? What happens to objects with a higher density in water? What happens to objects with a higher density in water?

Objects less dense than water float.... Objects which are more dense that water sink So why does Ice float then?

As water freezes and turns to ice it expands... Expansion means an increase in volume while keeping the mass of water the same Hence the density of ice is less than that of water and so Ice floats

water 1000 kg/m 3 (1.00 g/cm 3 ) aluminium 2700 kg/m 3 (2.70 g/cm 3 ) zinc 7130 kg/m 3 (7.13 g/cm 3 ) iron 7870 kg/m 3 (7.87 g/cm 3 ) copper 8960 kg/m 3 (8.96 g/cm 3 ) silver 10,490 kg/m 3 (10.49 g/cm 3 ) lead 11,360 kg/m 3 (11.36 g/cm 3 ) mercury 13,550 kg/m 3 (13.55 g/cm 3 ) gold 19,320 kg/m 3 (19.32 g/cm 3 )
