Natural Resources Reporting: Views from a Major Dr. Patrick Redmond, Teck Natural Resources Reporting Workshop Dublin Castle, May 15, 2009

2 Summary and Conclusions
Presentation Outline Background on Teck Teck’s Resource and Reserve reporting procedures – how we ensure NI compliance Summary and Conclusions 2

3 A Diversified Mining Company
El ano pasado nuetro ganacias llegaron a 2.4 billion de dolares canadienses Teck Cominco’s core strategy is to continue building a diversified mining company - and we have benefited in the last couple of years from this strategy. The company has enjoyed moving from commodity strength to commodity strength and as metallurgical coal prices rose then ebbed, copper prices escalated to new highs, then zinc prices took off, and finally, lead prices jumped to unparalleled highs. As a result, our company has enjoyed outstanding profit margins. 4 Red Dog, Alaska World’s largest zinc mine Production 2007 2008
Yo estuve en cargo de l’exploration alredor de la mina por quatro anos y puedo decir que tiene potential excellente a aumentar las reservas Red Dog’s reserves and resources position should be good for at least 30 years more mine life, and there is outstanding exploration potential still in the region. Production capacity at Red Dog is in range of 580,000 tonnes of contained zinc per year, and lead in the 100 to 120,000 tpa range. Operating profit has improved dramatically this year with both higher zinc prices, and lower treatment charges paid to refineries.

5 Highland Valley, Canada

7 Teck’s Approach to R&R Reporting
How we ensure consistency across multiple mines, commodities, and jurisdictions 7

8 Standard – NI 43101 Proven and Probable Mineral Reserves and Measured, Indicated and Inferred Mineral Resources are estimated in accordance with the definitions of these terms adopted by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (“CIM”) in November 2005 and incorporated in National Instrument , “Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects” (“NI ”), by Canadian securities regulatory authorities. 8

9 NI History NI was created after the Bre-X scandal to protect investors from unsubstantiated mineral project disclosures It is now the cornerstone of R&R reporting in Canada Teck personnel were involved in the formulation of the original CIM guidelines that underpin NI 9

10 R&R Team Paul Bankes, Director Reserve Estimation
4 people on his team with extensive R&R modelling/estimation experience Reports to Reserve Committee of Management (includes division heads) Which in turn reports to the Reserve Committee of the Board of Directors 10

11 Reporting Timetable

12 Resources to Reserves

13 Standardised Reporting From Each Operation
Summary Ownership Location Land Tenure Geology Drilling & Sampling QA/QC 13

14 Standardised Reporting From Each Operation
Production Reconciliation Modelling Method & Parameters Mine Design Parameters Resource & Reserve Statement R&R Change Tracking Economic Test Sensitivity Analysis 14

15 Signed Reports R&R reports must be signed and dated by the site QP(s) and General Manager of Mine ~16 mines with up to 4 section QPs at each

16 In-house Audits Regular audits of each mine site by Director Reserve Estimation or a member of his team Reserve audit template in place

17 Summary and Conclusions
We have a strict definition of a Resource – must have “reasonable prospect for extraction” Qualified Persons (QPs) are key – personally liable, must document results, efficient tracking of certification and consent We have a Resource and Reserve committee of the board. Officers of the company take on significant responsibility 17
