doc.: IEEE 802.11-02/528r0 Submission September 2002 Lars Falk, Telia Slide 2 Background Several fora work with handover issues between WLAN and WWAN Even if it is open whether IEEE 802.11 should start active work on such issues, new work items should not prevent them Most likely it will be the terminal that takes the handover decision The terminal need information about the link layer

doc.: IEEE 802.11-02/528r0 Submission September 2002 Lars Falk, Telia Slide 3 What could be done within RRM? Open up link layer specific information to upper layers Provide an API so that upper layers can request or set specific parameters

doc.: IEEE 802.11-02/528r0 Submission September 2002 Lars Falk, Telia Slide 4 Possible parameters The following list of parameters (probably far from complete) may be helpful for the terminal when taking a handover decision: –Data rate –Error rate –Delay –Delay jitter –Signal strength All parameters are relevant for max/min/average and downlink/uplink

doc.: IEEE 802.11-02/528r0 Submission September 2002 Lars Falk, Telia Slide 5 Questions Is the availability of such parameters at the terminal within the scope of RRM? Is the creation of an API for setting and requesting various parameters within the scope of RRM? Is the type of parameters listed within the scope of RRM or should they be more 802.11 specific?
