doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/xxxxr0 Submission March 2007 Srinivas Sreemanthula Slide 3 Abstract IEEE 802.21 provides Information Services (IS) for WLAN network selection TGu defines MAC amendments to obtain IS via GAS mechanisms and framework in state-1 Proposal to include SSID information in the IS data model –STA can obtain this info in state-1 and use for association

doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/xxxxr0 Submission March 2007 Srinivas Sreemanthula Slide 4 Problem AP can be configured with many SSID e.g. specific to service providers or specific to certain local use STA need to know the exact SSID to use for association Currently, 802.21 IS model –Supports access network ID which is the HESSID/WIID - can be used to identify the Wireless network but cannot be used for association –does not include SSID information required for association in the IS data Problem specific to WLAN, –Other links have one universal network id that can also be used in registration/association

doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/xxxxr0 Submission March 2007 Srinivas Sreemanthula Slide 5 Use Case MN AP IS/GAS Beacon((H)ESSID, IW cap, GAS) Gas-Intital-Req(802.21-IS-Req) 802.21 IS Req((H)ESSID) IS Req: 1. Is this ESSID good for roaming? 2. If so, what is the SSID to use here? 802.21 IS Resp(SSID) Gas-Callback-Resp(802.21-IS-Resp) Knows SSID to use Associate (SSID) MAC Call back mechanism not shown

doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/xxxxr0 Submission March 2007 Srinivas Sreemanthula Slide 6 Proposal Add an optional IE, TYPE_IE_WLAN_SSID, within access network specific information elements Note that this IE may not be relevant for other links (hence the use of WLAN term) Normative text in attached doc

doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/xxxxr0 Submission March 2007 Srinivas Sreemanthula Slide 7 Conclusions Bridges the gaps in assumptions between the two technical groups regarding network selection in WLAN SSID will be available to the user as part of GAS query supported for MIH IS in state-1
