Be sure you answer the prompt clearly in your introduction! Many of you actually did this. Great job! Some of you, however, only partially wrote a thesis. Remember, this prompt asked you to take a position, an argument. So five-part thesis is important. If I put a Q on your paper, that meant you were lacking a qualifier.

Sample Introduction that Works! Museums throughout the world make it easy for people to expand their knowledge of different topics. The reason people have this opportunity is because someone decided what is necessary to put into the museum. While this doesn’t seem like such a difficult decision, it is. This is because there are multiple factors that must be considered before an item will make the museum, the relevance of the item to the museum, and the accuracy of the item to the information in the museum.

Another Strong Introduction Museums in today’s ever changing, social media engaged era are not appreciated nearly enough as they should be. Museums are how we can relate to the past and the feelings of such amazing time periods such as the Baroque era, the Renaissance, and the Romantic eras. The artifacts recovered and displayed to the public are not to be over- looked because someone decided that it should not be and that is how we are able to enjoy these magnificent masterpieces whenever we want. Museum management should be focused soley on three keys when securing a work of art or an artifact: if it is historical, if it is affordable, and if it is educational.

Be sure to avoid naming a source in your level 1 sentence. Be sure your level 1 sentence states a claim that must be proven. Avoid simply summarizing the information from any source. The best use of sources actually incorporates more than one source within one body paragraph. That is the best way to show synthesis of information.

Body Paragraphs that only Summarize When someone is wanting to secure an artwork and show it off then you must be aware of how different people may react to it. Source C is all about the National Museum of the American Indian and the pieces of artwork in it. It discusses how the museum’s collection contains “cultural material.” If somebody were to purchase a piece from the museum and move it to another museum and put in the back, then it would be understandable for people of the Native American dissent to get flustered if they saw that. Now, it will be difficult to try and please everyone but pleasing the people that the artwork comes from is a must.

Another primary summary. Look at how level 1 and 3 is missing. Incorporating both would move this essay from 2 / 3 range to 5 / 6 at least. In source B, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts attracts many customers by their works. This was the first art gallery, natural history museum and art school in the United States. The museum was devoted to public patronage that also included astounding creatures. Figures such as a two-headed pig, a root resembling a human face, and a five- legged cow with no tail can easily be seen as unique and should be considered when running a museum.

Stronger Examples of Body Paragraphs Most importantly, when securing a new item for a museum, the curator must think about whether or not the item will sell. Due to financial problems at the museum in source A, Rockefeller contemplated on whether they should collect the work of new artists. They had done this for years, which could have been a reason for their downfall. An exhibit is essentially a product and, if that doesn’t sell, they need to find a new one. This is elaborated on more in source D, where it is stated that an item is not added to educate people, but based on its marketability, a museum will only make money if the object is marketable. What would a person rather see—a tool used for building in Mesopotamia or a beautiful original DaVinci painting? A curator needs to acquire those items that sell in order for the museum to stay in business.

One more… A third aspect of the value of an artifact is its historical value. Philipe De Montebella in source F discusses how the Metropolitan Museum is still looking at art lost in the Nazi era of World War II. To some this would be a waste of money, time and effort, but they do not realize the historical value art can hold. It can tell us of a culture through how images are depicted in a certain era. Art is a violent contributor to what we know today about the culture of the past. The value historically of an artifact is important when thinking about an artifacts overall value.
