4 most of us have some idea what we want to do in life… …getting a better education …having a family …being financially secure when you retire these are outcome goals … convert outcome goals to SMART behavior goals

5 SMART goals what does SMART stand for? S—specific M—measurable A—achievable R—relevant T—time-framed

6 SMART goals outcome goal: to be physically fit specific— exercise? jogging measurable— how far? how long? 1 mile achievable— realistic? 11-12 minutes relevant— suits interests & needs, is jogging something you can do? do you like it? yes time-framed— indicate time for activity to occur every day, starting Monday SMART goal: jog 1 mile in 11-12 minutes every day, starting Monday

7 participation activity: SMART goals (refer to pg. 38 in text for specifics) choose one of your goals with which you would like to get started _______________________ brainstorm several activities, actions, or behaviors that you could take that would move you closer to accomplishing this goal: ____________________________________
