2 Objectives To utilize common leadership theories to identify your own personal leadership strengths and limitations To increase understanding of shared leadership concepts To apply shared leadership concepts to common early care and education organizational dynamics

3 Leadership Styles vs. Types of Leadership Leadership style – individual, attitude, interactions “How can I be most effective with others?” Type of leadership – embodied in practices and qualities, based on the problem being addressed “How can we most effectively work towards a solution?”

4 Personal Leadership Describes the work of understanding oneself and using this knowledge to achieve positive changes reflective Qualities of personal leadership practice includes: introspection, strong sense of self-efficacy, optimism, courage, leading by example, commitment to continuous learning

5 Administrative Leadership Describes the work of ensuring task completion for the operation of an organization task-oriented Qualities of administrative leadership practice includes: management skills, organization, realism, practicality, systems thinking

6 Team Leadership Describes the work of creating and sustaining productive work groups collaborative Qualities of team leadership practice includes: active listening, inclusion of team ideas, trusting, inviting of discussion, consensus- building

7 Adaptive Leadership Describes the work of developing flexibility to thrive in complex, competitive and challenging environments adjustable Qualities of adaptive leadership practice includes: flexibility, comfort with change, innovation, distinction of the essential from the expendable

8 Visionary Leadership Describes the work of creating compelling visions of the future imaginative Qualities of visionary leadership practice includes: inspiring, action- oriented, creative, ability to see beyond what is, open, persistent

9 Distributed and interdependent Embedded in social interaction Leadership as learning Shared Leadership

Shared leadership is most effective in shared power situations Having an affect on diverse stakeholders Cannot be remedied by a single person or organization Resist short-term or piecemeal solutions Embedded in a complex system of interconnected individual and organizational relationships
