17 How to support the large population Yuan Longping ( born in 1930) is a Chinese agricultural scientist andeducator, known for developing the first hybrid rice varieties in the 1970s. His "hybrid rice" has since been grown in dozens of countries in Africa, America, and Asia providing a robust food source in high famine risk areas. He is called "The Father of Hybrid Rice". His contribution to the mankind is enormous. By his achievement, the Earth is able to produce extra rice equivalent to the food requirement by tens of millions of population.1930 Chineseagriculturalscientisthybrid ricerobust foodfamine Yuan Longping ( born in 1930) is a Chinese agricultural scientist andeducator, known for developing the first hybrid rice varieties in the 1970s. 19 Recommend or not? It depends on whether the government is able to educate its people to make compromise for the interest of the whole nation. …whether the government is able to provide women, pregnant mothers with enough medical care. …whether this government is determined enough to go on his own way firmly, esp. in face of pressures from at home and abroad. 21 The Great Leap Forward This movement failed because it happened too fast and in a wrong way.

22 The Special Economic Zones Almost at the same time with the one-child policy, the second leadership of China Deng Xiaoping made another blueprint for China. That was to develop Chinas own economics with its own characteristics. The first four special economic zones came into being in 1979 shenzhen( ) zhuhai( ) xiamen( ) shantou( )which are all located along the southern coast of China with their convenient transportation and historical business doing experience.

23 The Special Economic Zones More open and more flexible policies, especially for foreign companies and businessmen Provide more opportunities of jobs Receive more money, high technology and advanced managers from abroad Collect more experience Benefit more from the radiance of those successful cases More open and more flexible policies, especially for foreign companies and businessmen Provide more opportunities of jobs Receive more money, high technology and advanced managers from abroad Collect more experience Benefit more from the radiance of those successful cases

25 The Special Economic Zones Local people have benefited more so far, some from the land renting, some from family factory or company running, and others in various ways. Nowadays, there are special economic zones in different provinces, different areas or regions in the same provinces, or even in the same city. 27 What or why is the Yangtze River? 1.Its the world s third longest river. It covers an area of about 1,800,000 square kilometers with its watershed population of 1/3 of the whole nation. Its industrial and agricultural output accounts for about 48% of the whole country. 2.Its theoretical electricity storage is up to 268 million kilowatts, accounting for 40% of the hydropower resources of the whole country. 3. Water that can be developed is 197 million kilowatts, occupying 53.4% of the whole water resources, with an average annual power of 1027 billion degrees, which is equivalent to an annual output of 560 million tons of coal. 1.Its the world s third longest river. It covers an area of about 1,800,000 square kilometers with its watershed population of 1/3 of the whole nation. 28 Why…? 1. Historical reasons(1931,1935,1954,1998) : It is a frequent and serious floods region. So far, there have been about 220 floods. 2. In 1998, a devastating flood was coming. The government spent a great deal of manpower and material resources to carry out a flood for three months. More than 130 million Yuan was spent for the calls of emergency supplies. During some serious days, about 6.7 million civilians and hundreds of thousands of troops were called to participate in the flood fighting and rescue, only to avoid a great loss to lives and properties in the middle and lower Yangtze River 1. 29 Odd(Qi) Savannah Plan In 1944, an American dam building expert named Savannah was sent to China and did a two- year research along the river. In 1947 he wrote a formal report to both Chinese and American government making a conclusion that the dam could be built. Then, the U.S actively provided loans to the present nationalist government to start to build the dam. Because of the following civil war, this so-called odd(Qi) Savannah Plan failed.

30 other measures being taken 1. solar energy widely used in China ( the solar water heaters ) 2. gas sent from west to east 3. electricity ( mostly wind energy ) sent from west to east 4. water sent from south to north 1. solar energy widely used in China ( the solar water heaters ) 2. gas sent from west to east 3. electricity ( mostly wind energy ) sent from west to east 4. water sent from south to north

31 Conclusions One-child policy, special economic zones and three gorges dam are three of those great projects taken in China together with its reforming and opening policy. So far, it is obvious that advantages have been more than disadvantages. But the concerns about the aging society, the deeper and wider gap between the wealthy and the poor and the potential eco-system problem could be issues for long.
