Slide 10 Introduction The PI Partners Financial Reporting project (PI Partners) was initiated in May 2010 by the Best Environment for Research and Scholarship (BERS). The PI Partners Financial Reporting tool was designed to provide a way for Principal Investigators (PIs)and their administrators to: Easily access Sponsored Research financial data; Enhance administrative effectiveness; Improve compliance; and, Reduce financial risk Financial focus; 40% of PI research time spent on research administration – a common issue at almost all research universities, including JHU. Worked with PIs and administrators from across JHU to determine what they needed in a financial and reporting system – PI Partners is the result.
Slide 11 PI Partners – Goals Primary Goals: Augment currently available reporting tools to help PIs and administrators with their post-award financial management – planning and reporting activities. Streamline access to post-award sponsored research financial data, make decisions easier, and improve compliance. Help PIs manage their small business and answer the basic questions: What is my big picture? How much money do I have and when will it run out? Do I need to adjust my spending? Are there any errors? Where are my people allocated? Whom am I paying?
Slide 12 PI Partners – Design Approach Focus on user needs first; then choose technology solution Worked with administrators and PIs; socialized concept What do you need to see to stop doing what you do today? Solution must work for PIs AND their administrators Keep it simple, intuitive No variable boxes/pop-ups; click navigation based Minimize the training burden, speed deployment Manage expectations First iteration – get the basics right; build trust in the system Catalog features desired for subsequent releases Let users use it to better inform changes/additions needed
