Archduke Ferdinand and wife visit Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia Bosnia province that A/H had taken over in 1908 Ferdinand next in line to be ruler in A/H 19 yr. old Bosnian nationalist assassinates Ferdinand and his wife 5. A/H believes Serbian Govt. is behind the assassinations

8 War Begins July 28th, 1914 A/H (backed by Germany) declares war on Serbia Russia (protector of Serbia) declares war on Germany France enters war as a supporter of Russia Germany declares war on Russia and two days later declares war on France

9 Germany invades Belgium
Great Britain (protector of Belgium) declares war on Germany 7. U.S. through all this remains - neutral
