Reading list on Blackboard “Library Course Guide/Global Competency Readings”—first 4 items for Quiz 1 (Week 5, September 25). Announcements

3 Global Engineering Professional Seminar Fall 2014 3 ›Background: resumes are selective lists, from recent to more remote, most important first, tailored to the opportunities at hand! ›Most common issues: – 1. White space! Unused space sends message of limited experience. – 2. Lead with PURDUE! The BSME program at Purdue is likely your most important credential. Spell out: “Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.” Resumes!

4 Global Engineering Professional Seminar Fall 2014 4 ›Use specifics—company names, locations, job titles— no need to emphasize dates. Use what is easy to process, e.g., “Summer 2014.” ›Use all kinds of experience—not just paid work: volunteer activities, service work, Eagle Scout project, extracurricular leadership experience, course projects, hobby achievements and interests. ›Do not include information that is possibly too personal: religion, home address, names of supervisors. ›References need to be on separate page (for later use). Resumes—development!

6 Global Engineering Professional Seminar Fall 2014 6 ›The video assignment will also begin as a draft: – What: oral cover letter, about 100 words, one minute—save as digital file (format info later). – Purpose: introduces you and your resume – Use: preparation for Industrial Roundtable Job Fair ›Complete this draft in time to use it to prepare for the Roundtable on September 16/17. Next assignment: Video!

7 Global Engineering Professional Seminar Fall 2014 7 ›Video “selfie”—use your phone, your computer, or an ITAP lab. ›Write out about 100 words as a “script” for your “oral cover letter”: – 1. Context: Hello…my name, my resume…. – 2. Message: Common ground…I’m interested in XXX and I know your company…. – 3. Close: Thanks…looking forward to next step. Video “How To”….
