Death and Dying Module 11-8 Joseph Hollen Dakari Jones Ella Willis

Reaction to Death There is no such thing as a normal reaction to a love one that has passed on. The belief that there are a series of grief stages of a death of a loved one is too false. Grief is very severe when a death is suddenly or if it were to be earlier than it was suppose to be. People who

Reactions In some cultures, a death can come to different reactions. – Some encourage to weep and wail – Some just hide the grief In a survey of 30,000 German people in 2003, researchers identified 513 married widows. Researchers have found out that life satisfaction plummeted the year the spouse have died and then eventually rebounded to recovery.

(Dakari) AIDS Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome Aids is caused by HIV. Aids strikes down people during the middles of their lives or younger. Since Aids were identified in 1981, more than 25 million people have died. In sub-Saharan Africa, w6 in 10 people are diagnosed with aids.

(Dakari) Death & Dying Death of a loved one is more severe and any other kind. Studies have shown that the death of a spouse causes a year or more of mourning and sadness. It also shows that people who talk to grief counselors and people who talk to friends still adjust the same.

(Ella) Death & Dying The most difficult separation is from one’s spouse – a loss suffered by five times more women than men When death comes at an expected late-life time, the grieving may be relatively short-lived Grieve is severe when death comes suddenly or before the expected time For those who lose a child under the age of 18, their first psychiatric hospitalization is 67% higher than parents who didn’t lose a child in 2004, AIDS killed more than 3 million people worldwide Due to AIDS being so common in sub-Saharan Africa, life expectancy at birth has dropped below 40 years of age

(Ella) Continued… Those who express immediate grief are no more likely to rid that grief sooner than those who don’t Bereavement therapy and self-help groups are equal to healing time and supportive friends Bereaved people and the terminally ill do not go through predictable stages such as denial, anger, etc. Given similar losses, some people grieve hard and long, others more lightly and briefly Facing death with dignity and openness helps people complete the life cycle with a sense of meaningfulness and unity
