1 Phonics Screening Check Marish Primary School Thursday 5 th March 2015 Shabana Quadir

2 By the end of this session you will :  Have an understanding of what phonics is  Find out about the Phonics Screening Check  Know how the school is supporting your child  Find out ways to support your child at home

3 Children are taught to read by breaking down words into separate sounds or ‘phonemes’. They are then taught to blend these sounds to read the whole word. For example, d-o-g dog There are 40 different sounds.

5 Every Year 1 child in the country will be taking part in the Phonics Screening Check in June. The Phonics screening check is to ensure all children are able to read by the end of year 2. The check will allow teachers to make sure children are on track. What is the Phonics Screening Check?

6 The Phonics Screening Check is split into 2 parts. Each part consists of 20 words. Some are real words and others are nonsense words. At Marish we call these the Aliens name. Alien names are used to check children can apply known sounds. For example, ‘ai’ faich What is the Phonics Screening Check?

8 Administering the check A teacher that is familiar to your child will carry out the check. The check takes approximately 5-10 minutes They will be given the opportunity to take a break if they need to. They will sit in a quiet area and will not be disturbed.

9 The results The Government will inform the school of the pass mark. In the Summer term the school will inform you of whether they met the pass mark or not. If your child does not reach the pass mark then they will be required to re-take the Phonics Screening Check in year 2.

10 Phonics Screening Check The Phonics Screening Check will take place in the week beginning 16 th June 2015 If your child is ill then we can carry out the check in the week beginning 22 nd June 2015.

11 How the school helps your child At Marish we teach Phonics using a programme called Letters and Sounds. Phonic lessons take place every day for 30 minutes. In addition to this children secure their sounds and practise reading real and alien words daily Children who are currently not on track for passing are given further 1-1 support.

12 How to support your child Read with your child every day. Encourage them to use their sounds if they are stuck on any words. Ask questions about the book. Use the resources in the pack to help you. Display the sound mat in your house.
