2 Introduction  Note taking: an essential skill  Allows a permanent record for revision  Prevents plagiarism  Effective note-taking requires:  Recognizing the main ideas  Identifying what information is relevant to your task  Having a system of note taking that works for you  Reducing the information to note and diagram format  Where possible, putting the information in your own words  Recording the source of the information  分二類:做閱讀筆記與聽課筆記 ( 底下說明 ) 2

3 Reading Note-taking Strategies ( 做閱讀筆記的技巧 ) 1.Be selective and systematic 2.Identify the purpose and function of a text 3.Identify how information is organized 4.Include your thoughts 3

4 Be Selective and Systematic ( 技巧 1)  Not all of a text may be relevant to your needs  So, think about your purpose for reading  Only choose what you need  Two questions help you think: 1.Are you reading for a general understanding of a topic or concept? 2.Are you reading for some specific information that may relate to the topic of an assignment? 4

5 Be Selective and Systematic ( 技巧 1) 1.Skim the text 2.Highlight/mark the main points and any relevant information 3.Keeping in mind your purpose for reading  Read the relevant sections of the text carefully and take separate notes as you read 5

6 Tips about Format of Your Notes  Set out your notebooks to have a similar format each time you take notes 1.Use columns that distinguish source information and your thoughts 2.Headings that include bibliographic reference details of the sources 3.The use of color to highlight major sections, main points and diagrams makes notes easy to access 6

7 Identify the Purpose & Function of a Text ( 技巧 2)  Ways to identify useful information 1.Read the title and the abstract or preface 2.Read the introduction or first paragraph 3.Skim the text to read topic headings and notice how the text is organized 4.Read graphic material and predict its purpose in the text 7

8 Identify How Information Is Organized ( 技巧 3)  Organizing principles tend to sequence information into a logical hierarchy  Past ideas to present ideas  The steps or stages of a process or event  Most important point to least important point  Well known ideas to least known ideas  Simple ideas to complex ideas  General ideas to specific ideas  The largest parts to the smallest parts of something  Problems and solutions  Causes and results 8

9 Include Your Thoughts ( 技巧 4)  Record your thoughts while you read  Record your thoughts in a separate column/margin and in a different color to the notes you took from the text 9

10 Listening Note-taking Strategies ( 聽課的筆記技巧 )  Strategies for reading note taking apply to listening note taking  However, unlike reading, you can't stop a lecture and review as you listen (unless listening to a taped lecture) 10

11 聽課前的筆記技巧  Tips to save time before the lecture: 1.Revise the previous lecture/tutorial 2.Pre-read about the topic 3.Check the pronunciation of any new words or discipline- specific language in the pre-readings 4.Rule up pages according to your note-taking system 11

12 聽課中的筆記技巧 1.Distinguish between main points, elaboration, examples, repetition 2.Looking for non verbal cues (facial expression, hand and body signals) 3.Looking for visual cues (copy the content of any visual aids used, note references to names and sources) 4.Listening for phonological cues  Generally, the speaker will speak slower, louder for more important information 12

13 聽課後的筆記技巧 1.Revise lecture notes within 24 hours 2.Tidy up your handwriting and fill in any missing bits 3.Write a short summary of the lecture (1 paragraph) in your own words 4.Attach any handouts to your lecture notes 13
