Agenda  Project Description  Device Components  Background  Methods  Results  Conclusions  Demonstration

Project Description  Problem: Clocks aren’t always accurate: Schools, Hospitals, etc.  Our Project: Design a WiFi Clock that updates daily using NTP (network time protocol) servers.  Our Goal: The clock will always be on time and automatically update.

Device Components  PIC 32 Microcontroller  I/O (input/output) Expansion Board  LCD Display  Wireless Module WiFi Module LCD Display PIC 32 Expansion Board

Background  Project Proposal A WiFi module obtains a time stamp from an NTP server and passes it along to an LCD using a microcontroller. Display the time and update it using the oscillator of the microcontroller every minute.  Functional Specs Hardware – Digital LCD 12hr, Battery Power Supply. Software – MPLAB, C coding, internet protocol.

Methods  Wire our hardware.  Use C coding and MPLAB to have the LCD print a simple display.  Enable the Wireless module to connect to UP wireless.  Retrieve the time.  Display the time.

Results  Hardware is configured properly.  Microcontroller can communicate with the LCD and the wireless module.  Using MPLAB we can code the LCD to display desired characters.

Project Evolution

Conclusions  Did not get the WiFi module working.  Nearly 400 total hours logged.  Learned new skills we previously had minimal to no experience in. Had more software components than we anticipated.  Obtained new knowledge of C coding and internet protocol applications.  Acquired real-world experience (i.e. using data sheets, communicating to different departments within a company, making components from different suppliers operate together).
