5  Habitat for Humanity University of Iowa Campus Chapter (That’s us!)  In affiliation with Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity  Our mission is to…  Build  Fundraise  Educate  Advocate Just a friendly reminder..

6  Courtney went to Washington DC for Habitat on the Hill, a Habitat for Humanity advocacy conference!  Video Video  She and three other Habitaters from Iowa advocated for THREE issues affecting Habitat… Advocacy Activity!

7  AKA SHOP Funding  The program is used to purchase land and foreclosed properties and develop infrastructures that enable first time, low-income homebuyers  The program leverages more than 1 billion in private investments in local communities  Has built 15,000 homes and served 56,000 people and 35,000 children  It supports recovery of housing markets and the economy  In fiscal year (FY) 2011 the program received 26.9 million in government funding  In FY12 (2012), the program received 13.5 million (nearly half of funding was cut) Ask 1: Please support Habitat’s effects to providing homes to families and reserve $20 million for SHOP funding in FY13. 8  Video Video  What is AmeriCorps?  Serve local and national nonprofit groups  Paid Volunteer  Given actually positions, treated as employees  Why do nonprofits like Habitat hire AmeriCorps members?  The program is funded 50% by government and 50% by the nonprofit=CHEAP!!  The program leverages 200,000 volunteers and raises millions of dollars  Iowa had 79 Habitat AmeriCorps members (in the past 2 years)  Iowa Valley currently has 4 AmeriCorps working on the build site, with weatherization, and various events  Without AmeriCorps members, Habitat for Humanity COULD NOT be as effective or help nearly as many families!  Ask 2: Please support Habitat for Humanity’s efforts in providing homes to families by sustaining funding for National Service Organizations (AmeriCorps and VISTA) at $1.05 Billion. AmeriCorps Funding

9  The act is outdated (written in 1961): It is not designed to address the challenges of the 21 st century, especially related to housing, slums, tenure security, and urbanization.  We want adequate shelter to be recognized as a priority within US foreign  Does not support funding for houses oversees  Habitat believes adequate housing is foundational to poverty reduction and is committed to positively impacting the lives of the 1.6 billion people in need of adequate housing  Habitat for Humanity builds in over 80 countries around the world  Ask: To support Habitat for Humanity’s efforts in providing homes for families internationally by revising the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961  Representatives contact Michael Harold in Rep. Blumenaur’s office to help draft new legislation  We asked senators to contact senate foreign relations committee and request they prioritize housing, slums, and urbanization in the 113 th congress.
