2 Chapter 14: Sustainability and Prosperity  Sustainability:“development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."  Spirituality influences our morals and values and way of life.  Influence our positions on issues such as environment and development. Stewardship  Many people feel a responsibility to protect what we cannot replace such as the environment.  They may feel a spiritual connection to the land or others.  Often their position causes conflict. See page 299

3 Sustainability:What does it mean for people, the economy, and the environment?  Globalization has lead problems. What can we do to solve the issue as individuals?  Urbanization also creates sustainability issues.  Recycle programs  Public transit  NAFTA:Encourages Mexico to improve environment protection standards.

4 Sustainability and Canada  The perspectives of Canadian gov’t, business, developers, scientist, citizens and culture groups are rarely the same.  Canadian sustainability goals: 1. Protecting the health of Canadian and Ecosystems 2. Meeting international Obligations 3. Promoting Equity 4. Improving quality of life 5. Sustaining natural resources and jobs, industries and communities

7  For many years natural resources were not monitored.  Canadians are becoming more concerned with conserving.  Aboriginals were given special fishing rights that are protected by treaties.  The cod industry in N&L stock was reduced due to over fishing, devastated the area economically.  Aboriginal fishing also must be monitored for the purpose of conservation.  Conservation plans are strategies to protect and preserve resources.

8 Regional Differences in Canada  Wealth is not spread evenly throughout each province.  Equalization payments: tax money from all provinces is collected by the federal government then given out to the provinces that need it.  The amount each province received depends on a formula according to provincial income.  Alberta has not received E.P since 1960.  Designed to ensure all Canadians have the same standard of living.

9 NEP: National Energy Policy  Create by PM Trudeau in 1980  Aim was to lower energy cost throughout Canada  Its purpose was for Canadian not to pay global prices because the energy was oil coming from Alberta.  Oil companies did not agree with the NEP and many jobs were lost.  The main idea was to sustain resources and wealth but it failed.
