Targa’s Public Awareness Efforts Participation in industry sponsored programs for emergency responders and excavators Mass Mailings Newspaper Advertising

The Gap in our Public Awareness Efforts - - - Reaching schools that were located near our pipeline system To bridge this gap we implemented a TEACHER AWARENESS PROGRAM (now in our 4 th year)

QUICK VERSION Used ½ mile radius as our guideline Contacted Offices of affected schools during summer Set up meeting in the weeks before school starts (during teacher in-service meetings) to avoid student issues Had to be flexible to meet each school in their time window –breakfast, lunch, & afternoon meeting in one day in three different towns –two shows @ two different schools at same time

Program Setup As teachers entered the meeting room, they were given a 5x7 card. –One side had a pre-meeting questionnaire to be taken before the presentation –The other side of the card was to be filled after the presentation In order to qualify for the “door prizes”, cards had to be turned in (100% participation). At the end of the meeting, Targa provided all attendees with “thank you” gifts.

What the Teachers Got from Targa A catered Lunch (or breakfast or snack) Door prizes –Generally $25 each –Gift cards to Sonic, Applebee’s, Chili’s, and movies Contact names & numbers for Targa personnel

What the Teachers Got from Targa A 30 minute program designed to provide the teachers with information about the pipelines, how to recognize a leak and what to do in an emergency Informed about the One Call Notification System & the new “811” Program (many were unaware of the program)

What Targa Got from the Teachers We were able to “educate” the educators about pipeline safety We got many questions both on the cards & in person Able to interact with the teachers Documentation of attendees Pre-meeting & Post-meeting Cards

Pipeline Safety You most likely live near or drive past a pipeline every day, but didn’t realize it. Pipelines are generally under ground and out of sight, but they are not out of mind.

Working Near A Pipeline Digging near a pipeline is the most common cause of pipeline accidents. -We want people to call us before digging so we can prevent damage to pipeline and injuries to people. Someone will come out and mark the pipeline with colored paint or marker flags - Free of Charge

From the picture above, can you tell exactly where the pipeline is located if you were installing a mail box? How deep is the pipeline? How Old is Targa’s Pipeline? Is the Pipeline in good shape?

Call before you dig is the law!!! You can be held responsible for damages if you do not call first! Know what’s Below Call 811

Some signs of a Possible Pipeline leak Leaks from pipelines are unusual, but we want you to know what to do in the unlikely event one occurs. Your senses of sight and hearing are the best way to recognize a pipeline leak Fog only in one areaDead patch of grass Hissing sounds Ice ball or Patch of Ice Bubbling ground

What to Do if a Leak Occurs Leave the area & warn others to stay away Do not start a car, light a match, switch lights on/off or use a telephone. Avoid creating ignition sources that could ignite a flame Turn off any gas pilot lights. Turn off any machinery or equipment in the immediate area. However, if a vapor cloud surrounds a piece of equipment, do not go into the cloud to turn it off. Do not touch or breathe leaking liquids or gasses From a safe place, Call 911
