3 Social Classes  All of the multiethnic groups were considered inferior  Mestizos eventually became artisans and small merchants  Seen as socially superior to other multiracial groups once they began making money

4 Economic Foundations  Spain and Portugal both looked for ways to make money off of their colonies  Gold and Silver  Farming was more long lasting  Native Americans worked on real estates or poor farmers  Trade also provided profit  Sugar, tobacco, diamonds, and animal hides were shipped to Europe where they were completed and shipped back

5 State and Church  Brazil  Portugal appointed a governor-general who then appointed people to take over the districts  American Empires  Spain appointed a viceroy to take charge of their colonies

6 State and Church  Spanish and Portuguese rulers were determined to spread Christianity  They accomplished this by bringing people to villages where they could be converted and taught trades  Jesuits established more than 30 missions in Paraguay  Turned the mission into a profitable business

7 State and Church  Catholic Church  Built cathedrals, hospitals, orphanages and schools  Women could enter a convent and become a nun  The nuns would work outside the convent by running schools and hospitals
