1 National History Day – “Individual in History” – 2009 (Revised 1/22/09)

2 Categories Historical Paper Exhibit Category Performance Category Documentary Category Web Site

3 Historical Paper Category The text must be no less than 1,500 words and no more than 2,500 words Each word or number in the text of the paper counts as one word. This is an individual category Include a bibliography of sources. Primary sources must be included. No process paper required for this category. If you would like your paper to be considered for regions or state, it must be submitted to your teacher by Friday, February 20.

4 Exhibit Category This is like a Science Fair Project – Use a Triboard – not a poster board Make it colorful, neat, and include a lot of pictures – may also include other exhibit items placed in front of board Use no more than 500 words Include a bibliography that includes primary sources – DO NOT ATTACH THIS TO BOARD! Include a process paper

5 Performance Category This is the “acting category” Have props and a script to go by You have a 10 minute limit – you will be allowed 5 extra minutes to set up and 5 more minutes to take down the props You must include a bibliography – must have primary sources Include a process paper

6 Documentary Category This is the film or PowerPoint, or Moviemaker category You will have a 10 minute time limit. You must include a process paper Must include a bibliography with primary sources – ON PAPER! THIS SHOULD BE TURNED IN ON A FLASH DRIVE AND PLACED ON THE “V-DRIVE.”

7 Web Site Category May contain no more than 1,200 visible, student composed words Must be original production w/primary sources A single multimedia clip may not last more than 45 seconds Site must be viewable in a recent version of Microsoft Internet Explorer Projects must be submitted on CD-R Must include Process Paper

8 Process Paper No more than 500 words This is like your science fair log All projects except Historical Paper requires a Process Paper During the Process Paper you must explain: a. how you chose your topic b. how you conducted your research c. how you selected your presentation category d. how your project relates to the National History Day theme

9 Primary Sources Each project must include primary sources. A primary source is written or produced in the time period that you are investigating. Primary sources are materials directly related to a topic by time or participation. Primary sources include letters, speeches, diaries, newspaper articles from the time, oral history interviews, documents, photographs, artifacts, or anything else that provides first-hand accounts about a person or event.

10 Due Dates: Thur. & Fri., Jan. 15 & 16 – turn in parent/student signature paper Thur. & Fri., Jan. 22 & 23 – turn in topic and type of project that you will complete Thur. & Fri., Jan. 29 & 30 – turn in at least 3 bibliography cards Wed. & Thu., Feb. 11 & 12 – rough draft of historical paper, story board for documentary, web site, or exhibit, script for performance ∙ Wed. & Thu., Feb. 25 & 26 – Present Projects – include bibliography and Process Paper (You want to email your teacher a copy of your PowerPoint as well as have one on a flash drive
