AOI PCB (Bare Board Inspection)

Agenda  Coreco Accomplishments in PCB Inspection  Bare Board PCB Challenges  Coreco advanced solutions to these challenges  Evolution of solutions with diagram  Excellent technical support in HW/SW

Coreco Accomplishments in PCB Inspection  Coreco is #1 vision processing hardware/software supplier for PCB Inspection (AOI/AXI) in the world  Widespread reputed AOI PCB Inspection customers using Coreco’s quality vision processing hardware/software, such as Orbotech, Agilent Technologies, Camtek, TRI (Taiwan) etc.  Highly skilled and experienced R&D/Application team with rich expertise particularly in PCB Inspection  Unparallel vision processing features in HW/SW that are specifically suited to PCB Inspection application (proprietary algorithms, fastest capturing speed, multiple independent asynchronous acquisition channels, improved resolution at sustainable speed, Trigger-to-image reliability )

PCB AOI Challenges 1.Typical PCB fabrication errors Shorts, open, bridge, pin hole etc. 2.Line-width/Spacing measurements Complex pattern with many different width 3.Imaging correctly lines with irregular curved foot 4.Arched top surface of plated lines 5.Board Stretch/Warping 6.Unsmoothness of laminate surface finish

PCB AOI Challenges 7.Accurate alignments 8.Non-uniformity of illumination of sources 9.Required fast speed for inner layer PCB in-line test 10.Resolution/Accuracy 11.CAD to image compare 12.Rasterization of CAD data 13.Pattern matching 14.Warp of reference 15.Subtraction, Blob, Classification

Typical PCB fabrication errors Line Break/Open

Typical PCB fabrication errors Short between lines

Typical PCB fabrication errors Under etch and blob excess

Typical PCB fabrication errors Pin holes

Typical PCB fabrication errors Pattern correctness/dimensions

Typical PCB fabrication errors The etching agent used in subtractive processes to remove copper in between the lines, works in all directions simultaneously, forming a radius at the bottom of the line. The extension created by this radius is proportional to the thickness of the copper layer. In fine line PCBs this extension is large enough, relative to the line width, to distort the image of the line compared to the reference. This extension also forms a wavy contact line between the conductor and the laminate, thus making edge detection more difficult.

Coreco advanced solutions  For all defects such as short, open, bridge, pin hole etc., Coreco uses advanced proven proprietary algorithms to effectively detect all significant defects while generating the lowest possible false alarm rate.  Due to complexity of printing on PCB, measuring line width and spacing is a challenge. Coreco’s outstanding vision processing hardware and proprietary algorithms can meet this challenge with 5 micro per pixel accuracy for inline inspection.  Coreco’s expertise is up to the challenge caused by lines with irregular curved foot by implementing sophisticated detection algorithms that can track the central part of the line while ignoring the edge effect.

Coreco advanced solutions  An Imaging processing algorithm (shading correction) for compensating for the non-uniformity of the illumination source  In addition to the mechanical guiding system can reduce the displacement, an imaging processing algorithm is performed to further reduce the translational and rotational displacement with sub-pixel alignment accuracy up to 1/64 th pixel  The proposed algorithm can reduce computational load and improve the parallel processing performance by using the Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) instructions implemented in Intel Pentium IV, so called the Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 (SSE2).

Coreco advanced solutions  Unparallel vision processing features in HW/SW that are specifically suited to PCB Inspection application Fastest capturing speed Multiple independent asynchronous acquisition channels, Improved resolution at sustainable speed, Trigger-to-image reliability, Synchronization of external triggers, Time stamping, Onboard frame buffers Support of virtually any operating system Sophisticated proprietary algorithms all these can decrease image acquisition time, alleviate production bottlenecks and increase quality in a wide range of AOI systems and PCB inspection applications  The accuracy can be reached 5 micro/pixel, 20-30 seconds per layer for 12”x12” PCBs. There are not very few companies that are able to compete with this speed and accuracy. Obviously, Coreco is on the top of this competition.
