Lack of Medical Insurance: What can we do…?

Problem: Studies have shown that there is an astounding number of Americans that do not have even the most basic health insurance. The United States is one of the worst countries when it comes to money:patient care ratio. By that I mean, the US spends an ungodly amount of money in the medical field, yet we have worse mortality rates than many other countries that spends millions less. In many cases, patients are turned away from any form of treatment or test because they do not have any health insurance.

See a problem with that point…?

Traditionally, health insurance has always been privatized and expensive, but most have managed through job benefits. However, with the change in today’s economy, many are struggling to keep their job let alone worry about health benefits.

What can we do about it?

Proposition: Although there are some programs already in place, it simply is not enough. Medicare/Medicaid can only take you so far and you have to reach the criterion first. What I propose is a local pro bono health care center for communities in need.

The Plan: The premise is that doctors, nurses, physician assistants, et cetera, will volunteer their time to treat patients in need but have no insurance.

Funding To keep costs at a minimum, treatments will be limited to primary care. Obviously extensive medical tests and procedures are out of the question. The clinic should be tied to a local hospital that can divert some funding for HIV/AIDS testing, utilities, and supplies. Because the healthcare system in the US is completely privatized, other funding can only come from grants and donations. The hospital can implement a contract with their employed doctors and nurses to require them to work a shift each week.
