2 What is voluntary work? Every one can be a volunteer. Voluntary work means: -Spend time on doing something useful without getting paid (expense allowance) -A volunteer is not on the wage list -Not by virtue of one’s profession -No workplace

3 What is voluntary work? -Does not compete with paid work -Less than 20 hours a week -Voluntary work is voluntary but not without any obligations

4 History in the Netherlands -Late 1800: denominational segregation -Early 1900: increase in wealth and spare time -After WWII: ‘verzorgingsstaat’ an independent country -1960: denominational segregation comes to its end -1970: governmental interest in the volunteer -1990: civil society, the government gives instructions
