1 OECDs StatLinks Using DOIs to link to Statistical Data

2 What is StatLink ? A new feature introduced in OECD publications that enables access to spreadsheets files of data underlying tables and graphs in print or e-book publications. OECDs StatLinks :Using DOIs to link to Statistical Data Our goal: Each table or graph in an OECD publication will contain a StatLink based on a DOI leading to an Excel file of data underlying the tables & graphs

3 Printed under each table, chart and graph, DOI-based links offer instant access to the matching spreadsheet in Excel TM Adding value for both print and online readers:

4 OECD StatLinked books OECD in figures 2004 : http://www.oecd.org/infigures/http://www.oecd.org/infigures/ Society at a Glance 2005: OECD Social indicators The OECD FactBook 2005: a new compilation of economic, environmental and statistics http://new.sourceoecd/factbookhttp://new.sourceoecd/factbook … OECDs StatLinks :Using DOIs to link to Statistical Data Statistical titles Analytical annuals and outlooks

11 StatLinks benefits : Linkability Printed books becomes interactive availability of the link to the reader with no need to connect to or search a Web site (from the print page or a photocopy) Immediate access to the numbers behind the charts for consultation or re-use no need to search through databases or statistical annexes Persistent linking data always located so authors can use with confidence StatLinks to cite OECD tables in reports and articles Improvement of referencing quality Excel file contains proper copyright and references to the original publication OECDs StatLinks :Using DOIs to link to Statistical Data

12 StatLinks benefits : Discoverability Creation of by-products such as EasyStats StatLinks contains metadata which can be accessed by search engines more visibility on the Web for StatLinked books DOIs have attached metadata search terms not found in the table/graph itself can be added to improve discoverability OECDs StatLinks :Using DOIs to link to Statistical Data

13 All OECD content articles, books, databases, working papers,… are presented in one portal The OECD e-library www.sourceoecd.orgwww.sourceoecd.org DOIs will make it easier for OECD to weave the content together and so allow users to navigate through all the different content types Future benefits - Next steps OECDs StatLinks - Expand the use of DOIs

14 OECDs StatLinks - Expand the use of DOIs Use DOIs to identify individual chapters, articles,… in books as well as the whole book Use DOIs to identify Working Papers Back & forward linking From the Excel files many other links based on DOI can be added to drive back the user to the data analysis, chapters, publications, mother databases… Multiple resolution from the DOI link for a book, multiples links will be offered directly to its tables/graphs as alternative destinations and vice versa Future benefits - Next steps Automated process for 20.000 products
