2 Cancer Information Service Contracts Service to the U.S., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the U.S.- associated Pacific Territories 15 CIS contracts to operate the Partnership Program awarded January 15, 2005 3 of the contracts also operate a Contact Center These 5 year contracts (2005 – 2010) are awarded to NCI designated cancer centers and academic institutions

8 NCI’s CIS Contact Centers Located in Miami, New York, and Seattle covering all time zones Cancer information and smoking cessation services: 1-800-4-CANCER, Live Help, recorded messages, e-mail, letters, walk-ins English and Spanish NCI’s Smoking Cessation Quitline – 1-877- 44U-QUIT

9 CIS Data 2006 Over 100,000 cancer calls Over 4,000 smoking calls Email – 10,000 inquiries Live Help – 10,000 inquiries Discussed clinical trials with over 12,000 users

10 CIS Research Program Implementation of investigator initiated collaborative health communications research studies CIS Research Agenda 6 R21 pilot grants - promote innovative research in cancer communications. Development and testing of national, regional, or community-based interventions that increase the utilization of cancer information by the underserved and the impact of receiving such information

11 Collaboration in Addressing Cancer Health Disparities Forge collaborations between CIS and NCCCP pilot sites Leverage resources Increase knowledge and awareness in minority and medically underserved populations
