About Cook Captain James Cook was Born on the 27 th of October 1728 in a small Yorkshire village of Marton. But is a Scot by ancestry. At 17 he worked for a shopkeeper in Staithes near Whitby. But he decided that a life at sea was what he wanted and he became apprenticed to a firm of Whitby coal shippers. He joined the Royal Navy, after studying mathematics and astronomy. He did this under candlelight.

The First Voyage Captain James Cook first voyage was to track the transit of Venus, they stated there voyage and sailed to Tahiti were they anchored off shore were they watched the transit of Venus in beautiful conditions. After Tahiti they sailed to New Zealand and sailed around New Zealand they proved that it wasn’t apart of the southern continent. After charting New Zealand they Cook sailed North to Tasmania.

Australia East Coast Discovery While Sailing towards Tasmania A strong Storm blew them North and Cook made landfall at Point Hicks, after landing at Point Hicks they turned North-East and North, And on the 29 th of April,1770, the Endeavour entered Botany Bay. In Botany Bay a stay of one exciting week led to the colonization of Australia. What was gained at Botany Bay was stingrays and plants. Also Cook spoke of a large greyhound, of a mouse color and very swift, they were also astonished by how it stood on it’s hind legs and it made vast bounds.

Why It’s Important Event In History This was a massive event in Australian history as it’s was how we were colonised by the British as Cook discovered Botany Bay Were the first started the colonisation of convicts. If Cook hadn’t found the East coast of Australia, The British wouldn’t settle here and we wouldn’t of spoken English we might of spoken Dutch instead as they were another country that was in the race for finding land.

How it Should be Taught in Class The way I think it should be taught in class is by starting the session off with a class discussion they are asked about their piror knowledge about Captain James Cook. While They are saying these the teacher is writing a mind map up of what the student’s are saying. With when student’s have finished the teachers handout a information sheet containing information on Cook and his first voyage. The mind up is to stay on the board while students complete the sheet in which they will have to create a Coni logical ordered timeline and also a semantic map on the Main points of Cook’s life and voyages. Then when students finish they come in and have a discussion if anyone had got anything right before and what they learnt after reading the sheet. The Information is form The Australian Junior Encyclopaedia
