Every Cloud has a Silver Lining Lesson: Objective 1 (5.9) (B) draw on experiences to bring meanings to words in context such as interpreting figurative language and multiple-meaning words Grade: 5 (TX)

2 Introduction Look at the name of this lesson, “Every Cloud has a Silver Lining”. What does it mean to you? Are clouds really silver plated or edged with a silver border as the words imply? It is figurative language which means “be optimistic, even difficult times will lead to better days”. While reading today’s lesson you will see that a word can have more than one meaning. To be able to tell the correct meaning, you will have to look at other words – they always provide you with a clue that will help you to understand the right meaning. The same applies to a group of words that form an expression that could have a seemingly different meaning. When such words phrased together seem confusing or unfamiliar, look for clues in the stories that will help you to understand the right meanings.

3 1.Tess was a precocious eight-year-old when she heard her Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Andy. All she knew was that he was a very sick kid and they were completely broke. There were the house mortgage and medicine bills to pay. She heard Dad complain how he felt he was being driven up the wall by the people who came for payments. They were moving to an apartment complex next month because Daddy didn't have the money for the doctor's bills or the house. 2.Only a very costly surgery could save him now and that too would be taking a chance, as it was a touch and go case. It was looking like there was no one to loan them the money, and payday loan or advance was out of the question. 3.She heard Daddy sigh and say to her Mother with whispered desperation, "Only a miracle can save us now." Every Cloud has a Silver Lining

4 4.Tess went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar from its hiding place in the closet. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three times, even. The total had to be exactly perfect. No chance here for mistakes. 5.Carefully placing the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out of the back door as quietly as possible. This was her little secret and she was willing to bend over backwards to help her family. It was raining cats and dogs but she didn’t let that stop her. She made a beeline for the drug store which was six blocks away. 6.She had to wait for the pharmacist to give her some attention as he was too busy at the moment talking to someone in an inner room. She was not too patient as she was the sole customer. Tess twisted her feet to make a scuffling noise. Nothing. She cleared her throat with the most disgusting sound she could muster. No good. She decided to break the ice, so she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. Every Cloud has a Silver Lining

5 7.That did it! "And what do you want?" the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. "I'm talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven't seen in ages," he said without waiting for a reply to his question. "Well, I want to talk to you about my brother," Tess answered back in a firm voice. "He's really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.” 8. "I beg your pardon?" said the pharmacist. "His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?“ 9. "Well, we don't sell miracles here, little girl. I'm sorry but I can't help you," the pharmacist said, softening a little. "Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn't enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs." Every Cloud has a Silver Lining

6 10. The pharmacist's brother was a well dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little girl, "What kind of a miracle does your brother need?“ "I don't know," Tess replied with her eyes welling up. "I just know he's really sick and Mommy says he needs an operation. But my Daddy can't pay for it, so I want to use my money.” 11. "How much do you have?" asked the man from Chicago. "One dollar and eleven cents," Tess answered barely audibly. "And it's all the money I have, but I can get some more if I need to.” 12. "Well, what a coincidence," smiled the man. "A dollar and eleven cents – the exact price of a miracle for little brothers." He took her money in one hand and with the other hand he grasped her mitten and said, "Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let's see if I have the kind of miracle you need." To Tess, it was a blessing in disguise. Every Cloud has a Silver Lining

7 13. That well dressed man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a surgeon, specializing in neuro-surgery. The operation was completed without charge and it wasn't long until Andrew was home again and doing well. Mom and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events that had led them to this place. "That surgery," her Mom whispered, "was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost?“ 14. Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost: one dollar and eleven cents, plus the faith of a little child. But she wasn’t about to let the cat out of the bag. Every Cloud has a Silver Lining

20 Feature # 2 - Seals 1.Have you ever heard of a double agent? It’s someone who leads a double life as a secret agent, or spy for two different sides. Seals live double lives. They’re mammals that live important parts of their lives on land and other parts entirely in the water. They breed and care for their babies on land, but spend most of their lives in the ocean. 2.Seals are related to walruses and sea lions, for which they are often confused. They use side flippers to steer in the water and move about on land. 3.Seals are popular in many cultures. They are often featured as entertainment in zoos and water parks as well as on TV and in movies. Seals are smart, and can learn to perform many tricks. Harbor seals live in the zoos and play with zookeepers. Trained seals are much easier to take care of in a zoo.

21 Feature # 2 - Seals 4.Seals are prey for other predators such as sharks and orca whales. Polar bears also prey on seals for food. Polar bears wait near an opening in the ice for seals to come up for air, for hours or even days. Seals are their primary source of food. 5. However, human beings are a greater threat to seal populations than any natural predator. Humans hunt seals for their oil, pelt, and meat. In some places harbor seals are also killed because they’re blamed for decreases in the fish population. However, this may not be the case. Over fishing, ocean pollution, and destruction of fish habitat may be causing these decreases. 6.The largest seal is the elephant seal. An elephant seal can weigh more than 2500 kilograms, which is about the weight of a minivan. The smallest seal is the ringed seal, which only weighs 50 kilograms, about the same as a big dog.

22 Feature # 2 - Seals 7. Seals can live in oceans as well as freshwater lakes, such as Lake Baikal in Russia. However, most seals live in and around Antarctica and the Arctic Circle. Antarctica is so cold that it has no permanent land mammals, but six species of seals have found ways to live in the Antarctic Ocean. Many seals live in locations that are hard for humans to reach, such as Antarctica.

23 The word seal also has more than one meaning. It can be: 1. an animal that is the topic of discussion – closely resembling the sea lion. 2. an embossed emblem, figure, symbol or mark attached to a legal document, originally of wax with an impression. 3. to fasten or close tightly (seal a letter or packet) so other people cannot access it. 4. to block (seal the passage or entrance). Feature # 2- Seals

The underlined word means: a. to direct the course of; or guide b. to stay away from purposely; avoid c. a male ox or bull; bullock d. to guide the course of something in motion by a rudder, helm, wheel, etc.

27 16.
