MID-RANGE QUESTIONS Conventions – I have to know what you mean and be able to read your handwriting. There may be many possible right answers. You must make clear connections: – If you have seen any of the following comments on your work lately, you may not be doing this: Explain! Elaborate! What is the significance of this? How is this relevant? So what?

Which one does not belong?: You will choose the term that does not belong with the other three. Then you will describe what the other three have in common that the fourth does not have. APPLEORANGE MANGO CARROT Possible Answer 1: “Apple” does not belong because the other three are all orange in color. Possible Answer 2: “Carrot” does not belong because the other three are all fruits.

Generalization: You will be given a generalization. Then you will decide whether you agree or disagree with the generalization and list a fact in support.  AGREE FACT: Human beings, dogs, cats, bears, whales, elephants, cows, etc. are all mammals that give birth to live young.  DISAGREE FACT: The platypus is a mammal that lays eggs instead of giving birth to live young. Generalization: Mammals give birth to live young.

Related Terms: Choose 2 terms and explain the relationship between them. 4.2535 981¼ 64 Terms: 81 and 64 Relationship: Both are squares: 81 of 9 and 64 of 8 Terms:.25 and ¼ Relationship: Both numbers have the same value. Terms: 3 and 9 Relationship: 3 is the square root of 9.

Related Terms: Choose 2 terms and explain the relationship between them. cloudsrainriverscanyons glacierslakesstreamscliffs Terms: clouds and rain Relationship: Clouds produce rain. Terms: Rivers and streams Relationship: Rivers and streams are essentially the same, though rivers are generally bigger than streams. Terms: canyons and cliffs Relationship: Both can be formed by water; canyons are formed by rivers and cliffs can be formed by oceans (among other things).

Related Terms: Choose 2 terms and explain the relationship between them.  Despite the examples in previous slides, your answer should contain the same amount of information that is in a paragraph. A single sentence will not be enough.  However, you are not required to explain the relationship in paragraph form. You can use bullets as long as you explain your answer clearly.

Related Terms: Choose 2 terms and explain the relationship between them. COMMON ERROR #1: Relationship is superficial, does not contain enough explanation or elaboration. Example: Terms: Hunter-gatherers and mobility Relationship: Hunter-gatherers are mobile. This answer will lose points because it provides no explanation as to why hunter-gatherers are often mobile. It does not refer to any significant terms (like nomadism) or examples (like the !Kung) or other relevant facts (like small group size) in this explanation.

Related Terms: Choose 2 terms and define the relationship between them. COMMON ERROR #2: Explanation of relationship does not provide enough facts. Example: Terms: horticulturalists and agriculturalists Relationship: Both farm, but agriculturalists use advanced tools. This answer will lose points because it does not contain a significant amount of facts and/or refer to certain terms or examples. This answer could be improved if it contained additional facts. Explanations of any of the following would help make this answer more complete: - machines like plows - irrigation - fertilizer - single-crop v. variety - large surplus for trade, support specialization - large-scale farming - use of food collection - population density, group size

Long Answer / Essay Question In paragraph form – various lengths: 1-6 paragraphs often an opinion question (must argue your opinion with anthropological facts) or an explanation of a complex process or concept writing ability will be graded – never more than 30% Most important: – lots of relevant anthropological facts – clearly explained connection between anthropological facts and your opinion – clearly explained connection between each step in complex process/concept
