God Desires His Children to Walk in His Truth How is Doctrine Profitable to the Believer? Avoiding False Teaching God Expects us to increase our learning beyond the elementary principles of Faith How is Doctrine Framed and What are the Basic Doctrinal Principles? Does our relationship with the Father has anything to do with understanding truth? What does it mean when it says, Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth A Tale of Two Societies Created by Practical Living Ministry 2011 2

The word doctrine comes from the Greek word didache: "teaching." A doctrine is a belief (or system of beliefs) accepted as authoritative. In most religions, certain doctrines are considered essential to the belief system. Doctrine constitutes the core of our faith. A particular principle, position, or teaching taught or advocated, as of a religion or government Created by Practical Living Ministry 2011 3 There is a discernible, growing trend to move away from the systematic teaching of doctrine in churches that claim to be Bible-believing. However, what you know of the scriptures and principles of God is essential to your faith.

I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father. 2 John 1:4 Walking in truth shows we are walking with the Lord Jesus said, Thy Word is Truth (John 17:17) It is difficult to walk in the truth if we do not know the truth God orders your steps through His Word Created by Practical Living Ministry 2011 4 You can only walk in the truth that has been revealed to you

Doctrine has more to do with ones life than just provide information. It is essential for and provides for the following: o Wisdom/Revelation o Healing o Managing Relationships o Proper (Balanced) Prosperity o Soundness in life, judgment, decisions o Understand Ourselves o Lifestyle Conduct: Blueprint for daily living o Warning against spiritual darkness and false teaching o Provides Direction Created by Practical Living Ministry 2011 5

Contd: o Understand Who God is and How we are to respond to Him o Overcoming Issues in Life o Provide correction, instruction, rebuke when we veer off track from God o Faith/ Reliance Upon God: Teaches us Who to trust and How to trust o Discernment Tool- It is how we measure against the things of God o Serves as Schoolmaster to Preserve and Protect us from Evil and Danger Created by Practical Living Ministry 20116

The Bible goes to great lengths to warn us about false teachers, error, and destructive doctrines Those who have relationship with God embrace Gods truth through His Word. The World has no desire to know the total truth of the Word of God. (1 st John 4:6) – They live in Error We are exhorted not to allow or encourage anyone to bring a different doctrine outside of the doctrine of Christ. Yet we do this so frequently in our daily Christian lives (2 John 1:10,11) Created by Practical Living Ministry 2011 7

8 It used to be like this

Created by Practical Living Ministry 2011 9 Now its like this Dont Worry, Be Happy God is Love and He knows your heart Relax! Just be the best YOU that You Can Have a doughnut Are you Comfortable The Sheep is no longer threatened because he is now a Consumer

The Early Church continued daily in the Apostles teachings, fellowship, communion and prayer (Acts 2:42) o Continued: adhered to; attended to o Continued steadfastly uses a Greek verb communicating "a steadfast and single-minded fidelity to a certain course of action." (Longenecker) There was to be no departure from the apostles' doctrine, because it was the truth of God. Created by Practical Living Ministry 201110

Created by Practical Living Ministry 2011 11 Hebrews 6:1-2: Leaving the basic principles of Christ We are expected to grow spiritually which is directly related to our understanding of the truth God Expects us to move forward in our understanding of Doctrine He does not expect us to remain Babes in our understanding Are you walking towards Perfection?

Repentance from dead works – Works that produce nothing in your life or causes condemnation; Tradition can become a dead work Faith towards God – Gaining Salvation; Relationship building Doctrines of Baptism: Bring you into the family of God; empowerment Laying on of Hands – Healing; ordination; imparting Resurrection of the Dead- Resurrection of the body; our future state with Jesus Eternal Judgment - there will be a judgment whose consequences will be eternal Created by Practical Living Ministry 201112

Every Wind of Doctrine – Ephesians 4:14 – Unstable; changing doctrine Sound Doctrine (1 st Tim 4:6; 2 Tim 4:3) – Doctrine of Faith; healthful doctrine; Doctrine contributing to the health of the soul, or to salvation. Doctrine of Devils (1 st Tim 4:1) - Ambiguity of this kind in the construction of words. o Satan works to re-construct or mis-represent Gods Word since the garden, then with Christ, and now with believers o Also involved those who taught would hypocritically speak what they knew to be falsehood, having their own consciences seared o Timothy was to warn the churches against trifling and superstitious views, such as the apostle calls "old wives' fables Different Doctrines - Teaches which tries to replace the teaching of God's word with a focus on "prophecies" and "visions" and strange spiritual experiences people claim. Created by Practical Living Ministry 201113

Scripture: The Bible bears witness to the revelatory actions of God. (2 Peter 1:19-21) o 2 Timothy 3:16: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine…….. o Scripture may, however, become bound to tradition. The church may become a servant to and rely only on inherited interpretations of Scripture. Experience - A person has doctrine before being able to read and interpret Scripture. This comes through experience as an individual and as a part of a church community o Experience is not the most important factor in shaping or guaranteeing the truth of doctrine. o We must always guard against absolutizing our experience Intellect - The church has framed the canon, creeds, and confessions as a means of giving coherent interpretation to the witness of the earliest church. o The exaggeration of the intellectual factor can also pervert doctrine and Mystery is difficult to explain logically Created by Practical Living Ministry 2011 14

Participation in worship may be the most significant factor in the formulation of Christian doctrine. In worship the Spirit of God brings personal experience and leads the intellect to understand Scripture. Keep in mind that there are some things in the Bible that are truly stated, but not necessarily a statement of truth o Job said, The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. o Some things in the bible happened historically and have a historical reference, but we cannot build a doctrine upon it. Intellectual Study of the Word has one major flaw: Its limited to ones intellect. Thats why there is never agreement among scholars when it comes to the Word of God. Created by Practical Living Ministry 201115

We are from God; he who knows God listens to us; he who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. 1 John 4:6 Those who have relationship with God have no problem with the Word or Commandments of God Through relationship with have greater insight and understanding as we come to know the true writer personally Created by Practical Living Ministry 2011 16

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15) Rightly dividing has the idea of "cutting straight"; to divide right; to rectify; to properly proportion Gods Word and serve to His people Finding out the necessities of his hearers, and preaching so as to meet those necessities. The Bible does not mean just what anyone wants it to mean. Created by Practical Living Ministry 201117

Jeroboam (1 st Kings 11 & 12) He was a young man of talent and energy He diverted the children of Israel from their place of worship He invented a political religion He made his religion, Convenient for the people He disregarded Gods requirements for ministry and ministers (did not qualify them for service) He dwelled in the high places of idolatry Caused a whole nation to sin Created by Practical Living Ministry 2011 18 Jehoshaphat (2 nd Chron 17) The Lord was with him He brought the children of Israel back to true worship He tore down the high places He sent forth princes, priests, and Levites to teach and validate the Word of God (Torah) The nation prospered and even their enemies gave unto them and made no war against them They were also prepared for the upcoming calamity/trial Created a Transformed Society
