 What comes to mind when you hear ‘arts based methods’? Do you have any experience with arts based methods in your experiences/practice?  Really, the important thing is that this encompasses a broad range of tools/methods and approaches

 Background on Digital story work up island  This began as a health promotion exercise that evolved into a research project and finally became a series of workshops focused on community engagement and capacity building  The PROCESS of creating digital stories has emerged as equally important, if not more important than the PRODUCT

 Engage participants: Communicate meaning on multiple levels, build self esteem  Create legacy: Preserve traditional knowledge/community knowledge, recognize expertise, give voice to marginalized perspectives  Bring attention to community concerns  Create ‘Objects of reflection’: ◦ Reflect on our work in a different way-telling the story of our process ◦ The story becomes “a thing to think with” ◦ Think more about how the story (or data) will be used ◦ The creative process strengthens a sense of community

 Digital stories are really a slideshow, or combination of movie clips and images with narration and can include background music Purpose of Digital Stories  Give voice to your ideas  Share knowledge in a way that is accessible  Use technology to convey your story

◦ Theme ◦ Pictures ◦ Script ◦ Voice Recording ◦ These steps can be taken in whatever sense makes sense to you and your story

 Think of a theme for your digital story  (In the work we do with the digital stories project up island the focus is traditional ways of healthy living and/or lifestyle, the land etc.  For this exercise you will focus on X

 Take about 4-6 pictures that relate back to your theme (for a mini story) and 15-30 pictures for a full story (Today we will be aiming for short 1-2 min. stories )  Organize your pictures into some kind of order (think about a story line- introduction, main body, conclusion)  Import your pictures into iMovie

 Write a short script 2-4 sentences connecting your theme to your pictures for a mini story  Around 20 sentences for a full length story  Record Script (directly into iMovie)

The storyboard templates are a tool to help you organize your thoughts, but you can use a web or any other kind of brainstorming/organizing tool you feel more comfortable using

 Using the storyboarding technique and digital story process to create a ‘mini story’ focusing on X.  Work as a team (or individually) to develop a short storyboard and script.  Use imovie and a combination of images and or movies you take with the ipads (feel free to go out and spend time taking pictures- try to use at least one or two pictures or movie clips along with screen shots to create a short mini-story).  Your story should be1-2 min long.  Upload finished stories  We will come back together for a short ‘movie premiere’

 What went Well?  What was challenging?  What would you do differently?
