Project background Since 2004, over 1000 people have been killed and more than 3.4 million affected by flooding in Europe Without action, up to half a million additional people will be affected every year by 2080 The British Isles and central Europe will be worst affected by increasing flooding Statutory and community responses need to continue improving, particularly in urban areas, in relation to the UN Hyogo Framework, EC Floods Directive, and the response of each member state

5. Project background continued Northern Ireland’s experience after severe and sustained flooding in Belfast, led to research detailing urban gaps. Similar experience is found in partner countries A multiagency partnership framework was set up in Northern Ireland, including lead stakeholders from national and local government, and Red Cross to support community engagement work In each partner country we will work with urban communities to prepare for, and recover from, floods *1190 more women of childbearing age & families who would benefit

6. Project Aims This project aims to contribute towards, and share results widely on 1)Individuals and urban communities being better prepared for the increased level of incidence of flooding 2)Ensuring the right level of support, especially emotional support, to aid recovery from the effects of flooding 3)Study current, and encourage exchange of, good practice on multiagency partnerships in civil protection

10. Follow up All elements will be promoted widely throughout Europe, via a conference, and rolling out of tools and results They will be promoted on various Red Cross websites that have national, European, and global reach Finally the conference and availability of results will encourage extensive use of the results and encourage debate with decision-makers on how to extend, expand, and encourage further urban community involvement.
