Multimedia & Communications ATMEL Bluetooth Background information on Bluetooth technology ATMEL implementation of Bluetooth spec

Multimedia & Communications WHAT IS BLUETOOTH? “Bluetooth”, promoted initially by Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia and Toshiba, is the code name for an open specification for short-range wireless connectivity. The technology allows users to make effortless, instant connections between a wide range of communication devices. Atmel is a Special Interest Group (SIG) member of Bluetooth. 2.4 GHz Bluetooth radio Bluetooth baseband controller host Bluetooth Device

Multimedia & Communications Proposed Applications Telephones (cellular, cordless, other) Headsets Computers (Laptops, desktop, other) Computer peripherals (keyboard, mouse, other) LAN peripherals PDA’s Digital cameras and … the only limitation is your imagination

Multimedia & Communications WHAT IS ATMEl DEVELOPING? Atmel’s development is done through close cooperation of between its Wireless & Microcontroller (responsible for the RF chip) and its Multimedia & Communications Product Groups (responsible for the Baseband chip) Together they do the module integration A highly integrated module housed in a BGA package containing all ICs needed to perform the Bluetooth function All firmware needed up to the HCI (host controller interface), with the ability to develop higher level protocol software upon customer request A board reference design that contains the module, all required passives and the antenna to obtain Bluetooth compliance certification and FCC/EU approvals

Multimedia & Communications ARM PROCESSOR Configures and controls Bluetooth Baseband and interface modules of controller Allows implementation of high level protocols for Bluetooth and other supported interfaces Allows implementation of bridging functions between Bluetooth air interface and USB, UART, PCMCIA Atmel offers a complete reference design including software/firmware up through HCI

Multimedia & Communications ARCHITECTURE (BASEBAND) Bluetooth packet type processing Bluetooth slot delimitation Two Frequency Hopping systems support Radio interface implemented Enryption Engine Authentication empowered by hardware

Multimedia & Communications ARCHITECTURE (INTERFACE) Dedicated USB hardware –Six endpoints supported, each with double buffered FIFOs Dedicated full programmable UART hardware Supports multiple reference clock frequencies 13.0, 14.4, 16.8, 19.44 MHz All interfaces have 32-64 byte FIFOs for improved data buffering USB/PCMCIA have direct access to internal (external) SRAM for improved throughput Atmel offers a complete reference design including software/firmware up through HCI

Multimedia & Communications ARCHITECTURE (VOICE CODEC) Dedicated Voice CODEC hardware consisting of: –Digital Voice Codec interface, supporting short frame sync, long frame sync in master/slave mode –Voice CODEC which converts analog I/O to linear PCM and vice versa –Digital voice data coded by the CVSD (Continuous Variable Slope Delta) algorithm or as log-PCM Configuration of CODEC hardware by ARM processor Atmel offers a complete reference design including software/firmware up through HCI

Multimedia & Communications ATMEL’S ADVANTAGES AS BLUETOOTH PARTNER Atmel offers a complete solution for Bluetooth including functional compliance and regulatory certification. This affords our customers a one-stop-shop Atmel has a clear vision and product roadmap for a single chip solution. This roadmap includes both silicon process development and design infrastructure Atmel’s Bluetooth team combines high engineering expertise in RF design, digital design, NV Memory design, and firmware development working closely together with the goal of providing an optimum total solution for our customers

Multimedia & Communications Atmel’s solution accepts multiple clock frequencies Atmel owns its Flash process Atmel has complete control of the manufacturing of ALL ICs in our solution, thus allowing our customers to assume low risk in terms of product schedules, production capacity, and price competitiveness ATMEL’S ADVANTAGES AS YOUR BLUETOOTH PARTNER cont’d

Multimedia & Communications Development Kit Developers Kit containing two boards with RF, access to all interfaces, software/firmware drivers up through HCI and manual. Software drivers under Microsoft Windows initially with Linux ones to follow.
