The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium English Language Arts Claim 1: Students can read closely and analytically to comprehend a range of increasingly complex literary and informational texts. Claim 2: Students can produce effective and well grounded writing for a range of purpose and audiences. Claim 3: Students can employ effective speaking and listening skills for a range of purposes and audiences. Claim 4: Students can engage in research/inquiry to investigate topics, and to analyze, integrate, and present information.

Common Core At Del Mar: Variety of products: Essays AND speeches, podcasts, brochures and more Common rubrics—provide common language for students (and parents) Three types of writing: Narrative, Information, Argument Students do informational writing in all classes across the curriculum We have developed and are using a common informational rubric PEEER Position, Explain, Evidence, Explore, Restate Incorporates different depths of knowledge and levels of thinking skills Vocabulary and sentence structure, etc. are incorporated in writing process Revise to improve organization, development, vocabulary, etc. Edit to correct mechanics Deliberate method of teaching students a comprehensive and multi-step revision/editing process
Writing embedded in content curriculum; in larger unit of inquiry and study. Based on research, students develop essays that demonstrate content knowledge and effective communication skills. Variety of editing methods used, including peer and teacher. Ways for parents to help students at home Use rubric as guide for asking questions about how to revise, edit, improve work. Use PEEER model as guide to ask students about their written work, and about supporting their ideas and arguments with examples and evidence.

Scoring Information How your essay will be scored: The people scoring your essay will be assigning scores for: – Statement of purpose/focus—how well you clearly state your claim on the topic, maintain your focus, and address the alternate and opposing claims – Organization—how well your ideas logically flow from the introduction to conclusion using effective transitions, and how well you stay on topic throughout the essay – Elaboration of evidence—how well you provide evidence from sources about your opinions and elaborate with specific information – Language and Vocabulary—how well you effectively express ideas using precise language that is appropriate for your audience and purpose – Conventions—how well you follow the rules of usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling
