6 WWF's Forests for Life Programme: Presentation to WPC, 12/09/03 WWF Protected Area Targets WWF's main objective: representation –Forests: 50M ha of new forest PAs 50M ha improved management At least 20 governments assess their PA systems, by 2005 –Freshwater: protection and sustainable management of 250M ha of high-priority freshwater ecosystems, by 2010 –Marine: effectively managed, ecologically representative marine PA networks covering at least 2% of the world's seas by 2005 and at least 10% by 2020

Country level: –carry out & institutionalise system-wide assessments –link assessments to management response and implement recommendations –complement system-wide assessments with site- specific ones (avoid duplication!) International level: –have CBD's work programme require countries to institutionalise periodical assessments –develop agreed minimum set of benchmarks/indicators on PA mgt effectiveness –identify institution that can host international database and carry out periodical analysis WWF-Canon / D. Jew

13 WWF's Forests for Life Programme: Presentation to WPC, 12/09/03 WWF's commitment Support at least 10 new country assessments Continue the assessment of our WB/WWF Alliance portfolio Partner with others to advocate institutionalisation of assessments through CBD Identify funding for and carry out analysis of all assessments to date (info over 600 PAs) WWF-Canon / D. Jew

14 WWF's Forests for Life Programme: Presentation to WPC, 12/09/03 Recommendation 10 … requires parties of the CBD to: a) adopt and institutionalise periodical protected areas management effectiveness assessments by 2005. Such country-wide "State of the Parks" Assessments should be used as a basis for regular and periodical reporting of the Parties to CBD. These assessments should be based on the IUCN WCPA Best Practice Series publication n° 6 Evaluating Effectiveness: a Framework for Assessing Management of Protected Areas".
