Bible Basics Studies in Fundamental Bible Concepts Which Every Christian Should Know Today’s Study: Repentance

II Corinthians 7:8–9 “For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season. Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.

II Corinthians 7:10–11 “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.”

Repentance Its Importance: –It is essential to salvation. –Luke 24:46 –Acts 2:38 –II Corinthians 7:8–10 –It is a command of God. –Luke 13:3-5 –Acts 17:30 –It is a matter of grace toward men. –Acts 11:18 –II Peter 2:4

Repentance What It Is Not: –“A promise to quit sinning” –Luke 3:8–9 & Matthew 3:8 –Acts 26:20 –“Quitting one sin” –Psalm 119:104, 128 –Revelation 9:20–21 –“Hiding sin” –Proverbs 28:13 –Numbers 32:23

Repentance What It Is Not: –“Being sorry” –Matthew 5:3–5 –II Corinthians 7:10 –Matthew 19:22 –Matthew 27:3–5 –Saying, “I have sinned!” –Exodus 9:27 and 10:16 –Numbers 22:34 –I Samuel 15:24, 30

Repentance What It Is: –“Turning the human will toward service unto God with an abhorrence of sin.” –The most difficult thing any man will do is subordinate his own will to that of another (I Peter 5:5b–6). –Jesus illustrated repentance for us in the parable of the two sons (Matthew 21:28–32).

Repentance How It Is Produced: –Repentance proceeds from faith. –II Corinthians 7:8–9 –Romans 2:4 and 11:22 –Acts 17:30–31 –Not the reverse order (Acts 20:21, Hebrews 6:1; Mark 1:15; Matthew 21:32). –It is “granted” not forced upon. –Acts 11:18 –II Peter 3:9 –Hebrews 6:6

Repentance Applications of Importance Today: –Repentance is essential to your salvation. –Repentance is commanded of God. –Repentance is a change of will resulting in a corresponding change of action. –Repentance requires faith. –Repentance will not be forced upon you.

Repentance Who Needs to Repent: –The alien sinner must repent (Acts 2:38; 3:19; 17:30; 26:20). –The erring Christian must repent (Acts 8:22; Revelation 2:21–22; Luke 17:3–4). –Sometimes an entire church should repent (Revelation 2:5, 15–16; 3:2–4, 19).
