Why is it important that we can identify and represent decimals on a number line? IMP What are other reasons why it is important to know how to estimate very large and very small numbers?  Number lines in math are like graphic organizers in writing, they help us organize our information.  Being able to represent decimals on a number line helps visualize, or see the answer to a problem.  Number lines help us compare and order numbers.

✤ When we compare we use terms such as: ✤ Less than < ✤ Greater than > ✤ Equal to = ✤ Comparing decimals is similar to comparing whole numbers. ✤ 45<47 ✤ 150>105 ✤ When we compare decimals we use place value or a number line. Comparing and Ordering Numbers

Identifying decimals on a number line. Step 1: Determine the value for each segment on a number line. Count the number of segments between 0 and 1. Each segment is of equal length. Step 2: Beginning at the appropriate whole number, count the number of segments between 0 and the point you are trying to identify. Step 3: Write the value of the point as a decimal. Remember that decimal measurements end in -ths, for example: tenths, hundredths, thousandths. CD Identify point A on this number line. 01 A 10987654321123 3 out of ten segments 0.3 three tenths

Step 2: Beginning at the appropriate whole number, move LEFT as you count out the correct number of segments. Step 3: Draw and label the point. CD Label 0.7 as point A on this number line. 01 A 0.7.7 seven tenths 101234567

Guided Practice This is your Guided Practice. We will work on this together. Please do NOT go ahead. If you have questions this is the time to ask. PLEASE ask questions.

Let’s review what we learned about identifying and labeling decimals on a number line. A picture of a line where each point represents a real number and each number a point. Determine the value of each segment and then count the number of segments being used. On your dry erase boards, draw a number line and label 0.50. How do you locate a point on a number line? What is a number line? 010.50

Independent Practice This your Independent Practice. You must complete all of the problems without assistance. You must SHOW ALL your work. Take your time. Work slowly and carefully. When you finish you flip your paper over and you made read quietly until everyone is done. Good Luck.
