Let’s Set up our IAN! (Spiral Notebook) 1)Make a title page for this unit of study on your first page: “The Geosphere” -Rocks and Minerals 2)Cleanly trim your standards. Glue them on your second page!

Let’s set up our investigation! 3) On the third page, glue in the chart, “Is it a Mineral?” Label the items on the first column of your chart: –Rock Salt –Conglomerate Rock –wood –Quartz –Bone –Seashell

Chapter 3 Minerals of the Earth’s Crust Chap 3, Sect 1 (What is a Mineral?)p.65 Objectives: 1.Describe the structure of minerals. 2.How is a mineral different than a rock?

Tech Terms: 1.mineral - a naturally formed, inorganic solid that has a definite crystalline structure. 2.**How do you know it’s a mineral? Hey! Is it a mineral? Is it solid? Does it have a crystalline structure? Is it a nonliving material? Is it made in nature?

3.crystal – the solid geometric form of a mineral, produced by a repeating pattern of atoms or molecules (the crystal gives the mineral its identity). 4.Element- pure substances that can not be broken down. All minerals contain one or more natural element. 5.Atom- the smallest part of an element that has all of the element’s properties. 6.(Review Earth’s Crust packet for crystal shapes) 7.**All 4 questions must be answered yes for it to be a mineral!! So which objects are minerals?

Bellringer: Please copy this chart in your IAN on page 4! 1.**How do you know it’s a mineral? Hey! Is it a mineral? Is it solid? Does it have a crystalline structure? Is it a nonliving material? Is it made in nature?

Object Name Is it a solid? Is it a nonliving material? Does it have a crystalline structure? Is it formed in nature? Is it a mineral? Rock Salt y y y y Conglomerate Rock y y Paper Clip y y Rose Quartz y y Bone y Directions: As a group, examine each object and answer the questions in each column of the table. Analyze your answers and decide whether or not the item is a mineral or not. Good Luck!

How is a mineral different than a rock? RockMineral organicInorganic Inconsistent Consistent crystal structure

How can I find my science book online? Visit Holt textbook online http://my.hrw.com/ http://my.hrw.com/ ID: htms6 Password: htms6 Choose Earth Science Book! Write this on the password page of your agenda! HW: try this tonight and read p.67-68 Answer questions in your IAN!

3.1 Notes Continued.. (Please copy this title and notes in your IAN!) Minerals are classified by WHAT they are made of, ROCKS are classified by HOW they form. There are 2 Mineral Types: – SilicateNon Silicate
