3 The effect of heat is much stronger than the effect of gravity Combined gravity is insufficient to bind stars into a lasting, distinct clump of matter Motions of a few atoms within an interstellar cloud.

4 Competes with gravity's inward pull Material towards outside edge tends to fly out into space Extended disk of matter forms around the edge of the cloud rapidly rotating gas cloud

5 Hinder a cloud's contraction The particles tend to become "tied" to the magnetic field--free to move along the field lines but inhibited from moving perpendicular to them. Interstellar clouds may contract in distorted ways evolution of a slowly contracting interstellar cloud
