1 RE-ENGINEERING OF NATURAL STONE PRODUCTION CHAIN THROUGH KNOWLEDGE BASED PROCESSES, ECOINNOVATION AND NEW ORGANISATIONAL PARADIGMS (I-STONE) Objectives The need for an IP (I-STONE) to address the current problems and the future requirements of the European Stone Sector originates from the ever increasing need of the EU Construction industry for more and higher quality stone products and the fact that despite its economic importance, the Stone Sector has not made any significant technological progress the last decades. The primary aim of I-STONE is the reengineering of the stone production chain, in order to considerably increase its efficiency and productivity, minimise the amount of stone wastes disposed in the environment, produce a new generation of multifunctional products based on stone wastes and safeguard the quality in stone application and use. The ultimate target of the project is to transform the rather traditional Stone Sector into a modern, competitive and knowledge-based industry and ensure a lasting technological superiority of EU over its competitors. These objectives will be achieved with the incorporation of nanotechnology and intelligent manufacturing in stone processing and through the creation of new applicable knowledge and radical innovations in advanced materials and multifunctional products. The main radically new knowledge to be developed includes the development of a new generation of consolidating agents with chemical characteristics similar to that of the stone, which will efficiently consolidate the stone products and prevent them from breaking during their processing; innovative extra thin cutting disks, a new generation of Ultra Fine Dispersed Diamonds and new heavy metal free metal-diamond bonds resistant to high temperatures and mechanical stresses that will lead to the development of innovative high-speed drilling and cutting tools to maximise productivity and new multifunctional products. Valentina Cetean is an engineer geologist and scientific research, specialized in applicative and economical research of raw materials for construction and is working at the PROCEMA for 14 yeas. She has a Master degree in Environmental Management, a specialization for Management and Marketing of SME and consulting specialist and auditor for Quality Management Systems for the building stones producers. She is member of Romanian Committee for Standardization Natural Stone and prepares the final sustain of PhD thesis in Geology. She is the project leader of several national research projects related like to the methods to the improvement of blocks cutting processes, to the establishing and monitoring of the anthropic activity impact on river profiles, unconventional uses of the stones, petrographical, mineralogical and physico – mechanical characteristics of Romanian ornamental stones. Neculai Ciornei is Executive Manager of department and chairman of Romanian Committee for Standardization Natural Stone. He is engineer geologist and specialist for Technical Agreement of natural stone and has expertise on evaluation of natural stone durability of building materials and physical and mechanical characterization of stones; has a Master degree in Environmental Management Silviana Marica is engineer geologist specialized in the research of raw materials for buildings, inclusive physical and mechanical characterization of natural stones. She is secretary of Romanian Committee for Standardization Natural Stone. PROCEMA GEOLOGI Ltd- Geological Research and Design and Testing Laboratory is an independent department of PROCEMA and have 5 permanently employments and other research partners. The department carries out activities and renders specialized services surveys from more then 200 deposits for raw materials that can be used in the industry of building, technological processes in the building materials industry and studies of environmental impact. Till present, the research activity produced more than 50 new materials and obtaining of over 60 patents of inventions. The institute has an authorized testing laboratory for materials and products and co-operates with high education institutions and specialized research institutes from Romania and from abroad.
