Sponsored by the National Science Foundation OppWireless Spiral 2 Year-end Project Review Howard University PI: Jiang Li Staff: Sankardas Roy (part-time postdoc) August 27, 2010

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 2 Project Summary To experiment with opportunistic mobile wireless networks on ORBIT using its GENI interface –Based on our research project known as Pigeon Networks, which is a special type of opportunistic mobile wireless networks. –Focuses on performance evaluation (e.g. delay, throughput, and loss ratio). –Uncover the strengths and limitations of using the GENI interface. 4 Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 4 Accomplishments 1: Advancing GENI Spiral 2 Goals No significant accomplishments so far due to staffing problems, but progress are being made and the project will contribute to the goals given extension. August 27, 2010

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 5 Accomplishments 2: Other Project Accomplishments None so far. August 27, 2010

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 6 Issues The late progress was largely due to staffing problems. Attempts have been made to recruit a postdoc since November 2010. The first admitted person was in Singapore and decided to quit at the late stage of visa application in early January. The second admitted person started in mid February and decided to leave for an industrial offer after two weeks in the project. The third admitted person started on June 1 st, because it took 3 months to go through the H-1B visa process. –Postdoc is necessary for the project as the department does not have a Ph.D. program. –We are currently making progress and are committed to finish the project given extension. The 50% cut of budget also contributed to the delay as additional fund had to be located to sponsor the postdoc position. –Resources are constrained at Howard as an HSBC. Cost sharing is very unlikely to be provided by Howard. The bureaucracy of the university administration worsened the problem. August 27, 2010

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 7 Plans Plans for the remainder of Spiral 2 –Keep making progress on experiment program development –Apply for project extension Outreach to HBCU in Spiral 3? August 27, 2010
