“Videoing” for Success National Board Certification Awaits...an opportunity to show your PASSION for your students and your subject matter and the joining of these two …

The Video Matters  Commentary is read first and then the video is watched.  Assessors are not allowed to go back and review a video. They can reread the commentary.

Videoing Tips  Tape section must be uninterrupted and NO captions  Use power plugs and drop cords that are tied together, not batteries  Check the white balance before filming – close blinds, check lighting  Check the audio a couple of times  Have your students practice speaking up

Your Videographer – Your Victory  Meet with your “videographer”  Be sure you are seen on your video  Be sure your students are seen in your video – their faces are important!  Scan your room so the assessor can see what your room looks like and get a true appreciation for your teaching environment  Be sure teaching tools are seen since you will be discussing why these are being used

Student Interaction  Are you asking open ended questions?  Is there interaction between students when needed?  Are you the ONLY one that seems to know the answers (wait time)?  Address the students by first names  Call on a variety of students Equity and Fairness  Be natural (OK as natural as possible)  Are you speeding through your lesson

Commentary  Does your commentary relate to your video?  Did you address (write to) the questions in italics from your portfolio directions?

Partner Time Dog Cat Happy Memories Think about a time of instruction as recent as possible

WHY (student focused)???  What do you know about these students as a group?  What do you know about the individual students?  What instructional decisions did you make because of what you know about your students as a whole?  What instructional decisions did you make because of what you know about individual students?

WHY (subject matter) ????  What do your students already know?  How do you know they already have this knowledge?  Why is it important that your students need to know what you are teaching in this lesson?

Why (Teaching Methodologies)???  Why are you teaching this way? Demonstration Small groups Visual  Why are your students sitting where they are sitting?  Why are the desks/tables arranged in the way they are?  Why do you use the materials that you use? Overheads LCD Panels Active Boards Show-Me Boards  How are you assessing the learning taking place? Informal vs. Formal Auditory Kinesthetic Musical

Just one more thing!  Did you video what National Board wanted to see?  If you submit more video than needed the assessor will not score (or even watch) the excess video.  Label your video appropriately.  Put your video in your envelope!!  Keep a copy of your video!!!!!!!

Submitting the Video  Send video in acceptable format (DVD-Only)  Send only what you want the assessor to view  Make sure the DVD is cued where you want the assessor to begin (where it is cued is where they WILL begin)  Check your audio!!!! View and listen to your selection in at least two different machines and televisions before you submit your video segment.  Note: From former assessor “..entry score in the 1 range is a result of the video not being evidence of the commentary or something wrong with the audio/video.”

It is All About YOUR Classroom  Your assessor only knows what you show and tell them.  DO NOT assume that they know you know.  They assume you do not know until you tell them How fast can you go from 0 to 4???

Find other NBCTs  www.nbpts.org www.nbpts.org  Click on Resources  Click on NBCT Directory  Select search criteria and then “Submit”  Your list is revealed for you!!! Melissa Andrews, NBCT, 2001 – Career and Technology Education Melissa.Andrews@spartanburg2.k12.sc.us
