2 Start by Doing the Following Things Start by Doing the Following Things: 1.Take out a piece of paper 2.Draw a big box on it 3.Draw a horizontal line across the middle of the box 4.Put a Label Above the Box Titled “Nouns” 5.Label the top half, “Things I Know” 6.Label the bottom half, “Things I Learned” 7.Fill out the top ½ of the box

3 Definition of a Noun? person, place, thing, or idea

4 There are six different types of nouns! Noooo!!! Compound Common Proper Concrete Abstract Collective Don’t worry, they’re easy !

5 Let’s Start with… Common & Proper Nouns. What is the difference, kids?

6 That’s right! A common noun names anything that is not specific. Therefore, it does not have a capital letter. And a proper noun is something specific, so it does require a capital letter!

8 Now let’s discuss concrete & abstract nouns! What are they?

9 Concrete Noun: Can be perceived by one or more of the senses Examples: popcorn tree student football Abstract Noun: An idea, feeling, quality, or characteristic Examples: love humor pride confidence

10 See if you can find concrete & abstract nouns in these pictures!

11 Definition? A noun made up of 2 or more words put together as a single noun Examples? Next is Compound Nouns. This is really too easy…

13 Collective Nouns “What is a collective noun?” Def: A word that names a group Examples? audience family team committee flock

14 Collective Nouns “Is cats a collective noun?” Why or why not? “What’s the difference b/t a collective noun & a plural noun?”

15 Now let’s see if you know what you’re talking about… Identify the nouns in each sentence and classify as: common or proper, concrete or abstract, & if it’s collective 1.Each day huge crowds visit the Lincoln Memorial, which is in Washington, D.C. 2.The memorial is in a beautiful setting not far from two other presidential monuments and the capitol.

16 3. Between the memorial and the Washington Monument are two long, shallow pools. 4. The Lincoln Memorial was designed by a noted architect of the time, Henry Bacon. 5. The memorial is styled to look like a Greek temple and has 36 columns, one for each state in the union at the time of the death of Lincoln.
