AMUSING MUSINGS ON RESEARCH BY A RE-SEARCHER Dr. PISUPATI S. SUBRAMANYAM SENIOR MEMBER, I E E E
Justification of the Title Title of this presentation Title of the Ph.D. Thesis Justify every word of the Title Then More than half the work is explained Justify every statement you make in your work
Why Amusing? Unconventional tips Think differently Dont swim along the current Dont swim against the current Then how to swim? Think of Fundamentals and churn your mind
Why Research? Research for Research sake Research for Career Advancement. Research for Image Building of i) Self ii) The Institution.
Knowledge Development Product Development Obtaining Patent Profit making by Producing and Marketing the Product The Thrill of Research Research for
Definition of the term Research From WIKIPEDIA: Research and experimental development is formal work Undertaken systematically to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of humanity, culture and society, and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications. The word research is derived from the Middle FrenchMiddle French "recherche", which means "to go about seeking"
OUR DEFINITION: MORE AND MORE ABOUT LESS AND LESS
Types of Research: 1. Research in Science. 2. Research in Social Sciences and Humanities. 3. Research in Engineering and Technology. 4. Research on Economics and Finances. 5. Research on Medical and Health Sciences etc.
Steps in conducting research: 1. Identification of research problem 2. Literature survey 3. Specifying the purpose of research 4. Determine specific research questions or hypotheses or necessary background knowledge.
5. Data collection and experimentation or Matlab or other applications. 6. Analyzing and interpreting the data or graphs 7. Reporting and evaluating research publishing 8. Follow up like Patenting etc. if need be.
Research in Engineering and Technology. HOW TO PROCEED ? STEP 1 READ! READ MORE ! READ STILL MORE ! ………
SEARCH THE INTERNET! RE- SEARCH AGAIN ! RE- SEARCH AGAIN & AGAIN …..
STEP 2 CONTEMPLATE THINK WILDLY DECIDE YOUR AREA OF RESEARCH DECIDE YOUR TOPIC
STEP 3 PLAN HOW TO PROCEED. TRY DIFFERENT MATHEMATICAL TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES EXECUTE YOUR PLAN
STEP 4 COMPARE YOUR RESULTS WITH THE RESULTS OF OTHERS OR WITH YOUR RESULTS OBTATAINED USING OTHER TOOLS OR TECHNIQUES. FREQUENTLY PRESENT SEMINARS ON PROGRESS OF YOUR FOR PEER EVALUTION AND REEP THE BENEFITS. PUBLISH REGULARLY DIFFERENT PHASES OF YOUR WORK TO ESTABLISH YOUR RIGHTS OVER YOUR WORK
PUBLISH OR PERISH. WHY PUBLICATIONS? Reviewers comments and Readers queries help WHY SEMINARS ON RESEARCH WORK? Peers casual remarks and comments help
PRESENTATION OF YOUR WORK STICK TO TIME LIMIT DEPENDING ON THE PURPOSE ALLOT SOME TIME FOR DISCUSSIONS PREPARE A FEW MORE SLIDES THAN REQUIRED SLIDES SHOULD BE GOOD IN APPEARANCE YOU MAY ADD SIMPLE ANIMATION AND AUDIO PRESENT ALL NECESSARY SLIDES IN PROPER ORDER
AUDIENCE ARE TO READ THE SLIDES, NOT YOU SLIDES ARE FOR YOU NOT TO MISS ANY POINT SLIDES SHOULD NOT CONTAIN DERIVATIONS SLIDES SHOULD CONTAIN ONLY POINTS IN BRIEF RELEVANT CASE STUDIES MAY BE NARRATED TO MAKE THE PRESENTATION LIVELY PRESENT COFIDENTLY AND BOLDLY
FOLLOW UP ACTIONS LIKE PATENTING ETC. IF NEED BE.
ENGINEERING RESEARCH: THERE IS ONLY ONE ENGINEERING DISCIPLINE, SYSTEMS ENGINEERING Why? Every System is Modeled Mathematically and Solved
BASIC AND USEFUL PREREQUISITES FOR RESEARCH. A GOOD BASIC DOMAIN KNOWLEDGE IN THE CHOSEN AREA OF RESEARCH. GOOD COMPUTER & INTERNET PRACTICE A GOOD BASIC KNOWLEDGE IN ALL OR A FEW OF MATHEMATICS STATISTICS RANDOM VARIABLES AND STOCHASTIC PROCESSES DIGITAL ELECTRONICS CONTROL SYSTEMS C/C++ PROGRAMMING MATLAB/SIULATION-NECESSARY TOOL BOXES SIMULATION AND MODELLING SEARCH TECHNIQUES OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUES SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE
STAGES OF TACKLING THE PROBLEM: IDENTIFICATION OF THE PROBLEM MODELING SIMULATION OR SOLUTION VERIFICATION AND VALIDATION OF RESULTS DEVELOPMENT OF HARDWARE OR PROTOTYPE TESTING MODIFICATION IF NECESSARY REPEAT STEPS ii to vii till satisfied DOCUMENTATION
ATTAIN SUFFICIENT PROFICIENCY BY DOING THE WORK YOURSELF. START GUIDING OTHERS CONFIDENTLY. DISSEMINATE YOUR KNOWLEDGE BY SHARING WITH OTHERS COMPETENCY AND CONFIDENCE:
ATTEND SHORT TERM, LONG TERM CONFERENCES TO KNOW LATEST DEVELOPMENTS AND TO FIND OUT RESOURCE PERSONS AND RESOURCE MATERIALS. MIX WITH OTHER PARTICIPANTS DISCUSS WITH OTHER PARTICIPANTS AND RESOURCE PERSONS ORGANIZE CONFERENCES, GUEST LECTURES AND DISCUSS WITH OTHERS GET THE HELP OF SENIOR FACULTY. DISCUSS WITH EXPERTS THROUGH E-MAIL ADDITIONAL STEPS TO IMPROVE COMPETENCY AND PROSPER:
INTER-DISCIPLINARY RESEARCH MINGLE WITH FACULTY OF OTHER DEPARTMENTS AND DISCUSS TECHNICAL TOPICS. EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITY OF INTER-DISCIPLINARY RESEARCH IDENTIFYING THE AREA AND PROBLEM. TRY TO APPLY TOOLS YOU USED TO THAT PROBLEM. YOU MAY ALSO TRY OTHER TOOLS USED IN OTHER FIELDS TO THE PROBLEM. PROCEED CONFIDENTLY WITH THE HELP OF YOUR COLLEAGUE IN THAT AREA.
FAN OUT FEND FOR YOURSELF COME OUT IN FLYING COLORS. DISSEMINATE YOUR KNOWLEDGE HELP OTHERS GREEN SIGNAL:
