A REA OF A T RAPEZOID

B Y D EFINITION Trapezoid – a quadrilateral (4-sided figure) with one pair of parallel sides.

A CTIVATE YOUR MIND ACTIVITY On a pieces of paper, using a ruler draw two trapezoids of equal size and shape. Cut each of these trapezoids out. Try to fit them together to form another shape we have previously explored during this unit. What shape can two trapezoids come together to form?

A CTIVATE YOUR MIND ACTIVITY If you flip one of the trapezoids up side down the come together to form a parallelogram! We already know what the formula for a parallelogram is, given that two trapezoids can come together to form a parallelogram what do you think the formula for a trapezoid is? Why?

A REA OF A TRAPEZOID In the diagram below, the bases are parallel. To find the area of a trapezoid, take the sum of its bases (add the bases), multiply the sum (the total of the bases) by the height of the trapezoid, and then divide the result by 2, The formula for the area of a trapezoid is: Area = (a + b)x h÷2

V IDEO ANYONE ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJ6f-9qpGiM In the clip they use another form of the formula. Either or may be used. You will get the same answer. Pause the video before they reveal the answer and work it out yourself! See if your answer matches up!

W AIT A MINUTE … WHAT DOES THE FORMULA FOR THE AREA OF A TRAPEZOID HAVE TO DO WITH A PARALLELOGRAM Watch section 2:27- 4:20 of this video clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gv2DvzRnf8Y A trapezoid is an irregular shape. Remember what we’ve learned. If you have an irregular shape and you’re asked to find the area you may have to transform the shape into something you recognize and then subtract the imaginary area you added on.

F IND THE AREA OF THE TRAPEZOID Follow the link below, scroll down to the section that says “Practice” on the webpage and put yourself to the test! http://www.aaamath.com/geo78_x5.htm
