3 Great Inventions/Inventors and Ideas Steel replaced Iron in the late 1800’s Electricity, oil, gasoline, and natural gas became the new sources of power Thomas Edison became the greatest inventor of his time Called the Wizard of Menlo Park for his laboratory for industrial research located there Greatest invention was the light bulb Other inventions included the phonograph, the door bell, and typewriter

4 More Inventions Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone The Wright Brothers invented the airplane Ford came out with the Model T car in 1913

5 Medical Advances A great number of medical advances saved lives Anesthesia was introduced making surgeries less painful Infections decreased Sterilized instruments came into use Many cures for diseases were discovered

6 Science New Scientific theories were presented which laid the foundations for modern biology, chemistry, and physics

7 Women At the Turn of the Century Women faced economic problems Made about half as much as men Unions did not accept women Entered new fields of teaching and nursing Had few legal rights Wanted the right to vote
