Philips Medical Systems, Jack Harrington, 20050929 2 IHE-PCD Use Cases as an IHE Process Example Use Cases Use Case Generation Process – Brainstorming, Identification Prioritize 4 Use Cases Breakouts – Develop text description of the Use case scenario. (45 min) one page max Agenda

Philips Medical Systems, Jack Harrington, 20050929 3 IHE-PCD

Philips Medical Systems, Jack Harrington, 20050929 4 IHE-PCD Healthcare Site with Complex Problematic Process involving heterogeneous information system Vendor expertise Integration Profile Proposed solution Using existing standards IHE Technical Framework details solution Vendor implements solution into REAL product Vendor tests solution at Connect-a-thon Professional Societies Demonstrate/Educate That solution exists Healthcare Site Includes IHE in RFP

Philips Medical Systems, Jack Harrington, 20050929 5 IHE-PCD Organization of Technical Frameworks (TFs) Volume 1: Integration Profiles –Describes clinical need and use cases –Identifies the actors and transactions Volume 2+ of Technical Framework –Provides implementation specification for each transaction

Philips Medical Systems, Jack Harrington, 20050929 6 IHE-PCD Key IHE Concepts Generalized Systems -> ActorsGeneralized Systems -> Actors Interactions between Actors -> TransactionsInteractions between Actors -> Transactions Problem/Solution Scenarios-> Integration ProfilesProblem/Solution Scenarios-> Integration Profiles For each Integration Profile:For each Integration Profile: the context is described (which real-world problem)the context is described (which real-world problem) the actors are defined (what systems are involved)the actors are defined (what systems are involved) the transactions are defined (what must they do)the transactions are defined (what must they do)

Philips Medical Systems, Jack Harrington, 20050929 7 IHE-PCD 1 st key concept: Actor Represents a set of application roles and responsibilities performed by a system Always supported by a real-world system A real-world system may support several IHE Actors Examples: –Order Placer –Order Filler –Patient Admission, Discharge and Transfer (ADT) –Laboratory Automation Manager –Point Of Care Analyzer IHE leaves the definition of products to users and vendors

Philips Medical Systems, Jack Harrington, 20050929 8 IHE-PCD 2 nd key concept: Transaction A set of interactions or messages defined between two Actors for a specific task. Defines unambiguously how the Actors must cooperate to achieve this task. Using existing standards such as HL7, DICOM, NCCLS etc. Order Placer Order Filler New order Order accepted Battery replaced Acknowledgement Status change Acknowledgement Example: Transaction LAB-1 « Placer order management » Order Placer Order Filler Placer order management [LAB-1] IHE defines transactions at a user-level workflow

Philips Medical Systems, Jack Harrington, 20050929 9 IHE-PCD 3 rd key concept: Integration Profile Examples: Enterprise User Authentication Retrieve Information for Display Laboratory Scheduled Workflow Echo Laboratory Workflow Cross-Enterprise Document Sharing Referenced standard (HL7) Detailed messaging info ------------- ------------- Roles Integration Profile Actor … Transaction ……… Solves an Integration Problem: A collection of real world information exchange capabilities supported by a set of specific Actors using Standards-based Transactions

Philips Medical Systems, Jack Harrington, 20050929 10 IHE-PCD Examples of Use Case IHE Laboratory Technical Framework –ActorsActors –Use CasesUse Cases Capture Capnography Data
