A View of Yourself Through Famous Writers A Project “Nothing in the world is so powerful as an idea whose time has come.” --Victor Hugo

Objective This is an activity where you will have to research famous quotes by writers that in some ways describe you.

Step 1 This project will help us know who you are through the words of someone else. You need to consider your family, hobbies and any other topic you feel makes you unique. Remember that this project is helping the class better understand you.

Step 1 (cont.) First decide what makes you tick. Consider the following… Family Hobbies Friends Likes Dislikes

Step 2 Once you have selected ideas about how to explain yourself move on to the fun part. You must now begin to research famous quotes from: short stories, plays, novels, literature books, or poetry books. The major rule is that these quotes must come from famous writers/authors. They can be foreign or American writers. They can be writers of fiction or nonfiction. The world of literature and writing is at your fingertips to enable you to describe yourself.

Step 2 (cont.) The next slide contains a list of websites you are welcome to use for this project. Also do research at the library or use your own Internet sources. You may even have some favorite books at home that will be perfect for this project. The point is, this project represents you as an individual so use what you need to make it unique and as creative as possible.

Project Guidelines There is a scoring guide for this project, so read it carefully. It has ten categories, and you can receive up to 10 points per category for a maximum of 100 points. Do not write a long report. Find creative and clever ways to present your findings through the presentation. You need to read to the class the passages or quotes that describe you, then tell us why (use at least 5 quotes or passages)? I would like you to be able to explain the "why" without reading a report to class.

Project Guidelines (cont.) Those of you who are artistic will find that "A picture can tell a thousand words." You may draw or cutout pictures to help with your explanation of yourself. Some of you might use pictures with quotes as a "slide show" of who you are. Those of you who are into drama may choose to dress up in various ways. You may think of this project as a skit of your life through other peoples' words.

Project Guidelines (cont.) You must present your project in a 3-5 minute time frame. I would prefer that you do your best to present and not read the project. I know you will have to read the quotes and passages but present the explanation.

Project Guidelines (cont.) Your project grade will be a reflection of how closely you followed the project directions. Use any form of creativity you think will make your project standout. I will reward highly for imagination and insightful thinking. Please take note that the scoring guide includes a category for integrating technology into this project. So, you are welcome to use technology. I have only listed a few of the ways to be creative. Plan and organize a way for us to get to know you.

Evaluation & Presentation You will have a small window of class time to work on this project. After that all work must be done outside of class. Do not put this project off until the night before it's due. START IMMEDIATELY! This project is worth a test grade. Students will be randomly chosen to present their projects. Although, it may take more than one day to present all projects you should ALL be ready to go on the due date.
