2 Today’s Purposes As a result of our work today, you will understand that… ◦ there are two sets of math standards ◦ each standard is part of progression of learning that spans over grade levels ◦ Iowa Core Math standards will require change in curriculum, instruction and assessment

3 There are TWO sets of mathematics standards. Standards for Mathematical Practice ◦ Eight standards for every student K-12 ◦ Habits of Mind ◦ Pages 8-10 in Iowa Core Content Standards ◦ Grade level K-8 ◦ Conceptual Categories for High School

What would you see students saying and doing during the task that would indicate they are engaging in Practice 3? What changes in teaching and learning will be necessary for students to grow in Practice 3? 6

The focus deeply on the major work of each grade so that students can gain strong foundations.” 8

10 On the handout, talk with a small group about which component of Balanced Emphasis (procedural fluency, conceptual understanding, application) each standard seems to connect to most closely.

11 Now decide if each example of math work to the right captures the intent the standard.

12 Standards at each grade level allow students to build new understanding on foundations created in previous years. Each standard is not a new event, but an extension of previous learning. Standards at each grade level must be learned because future learning depends on them. Standards within a grade level have connections that need to be explicit.

13 Think about Strike It Out… In the Grade One content standards, find a standard that the activity addresses. ◦ Use your electronic or print copy of the Iowa Core.
