2 Introduction Benefits of doing well in math This workshop will present –note taking – organizing material – study skills – test-taking skills. Resources available

3 What are your pictures when you think of math? “Doing well will make me a nerd” “My friends will not like me anymore” “School will not be fun” “Math fields are only for white males “I will never use this stuff in the real world” “Math is worked by magic” “I am good with words, so I cannot be good at math”

4 Benefits of learning math Higher self-esteem from doing something difficult More opportunities will be open to you More confidence in everyday situations More at home in a world driven by technology Greater problem solving skills

5 Getting Prepared Supplies: –textbook –notebook –pencils, erasers, calculator –place to work Attitude –I can do this –Math is important to me –I will do everything I can to succeed

6 Use your textbook READ, yes, read the textbook –slowly –actively –out loud Make notes Learn the “specifics” Be gentle with yourself

7 Ask questions fearlessly Ask whatever will aid your understanding Do not worry about anyone else’s reaction Remember your reasons for going to school Sometimes we have to admit we do not know something before we can begin to learn

8 Do your homework Practice,Practice, Practice Learn to recognize “types” of problems Know the terms Understand the formulas Learn to pace yourself Take frequent, short breaks Think about math outside the classroom

9 Get help Have a study partner Start a study group Get a tutor

10 Test Taking Be prepared Get plenty of rest Learn to control your anxiety Do not let yourself get “stuck” Pace yourself Never leave a blank Check your work
